I found this book very gripping with one surprise after another. The narrator was excellent.

Whew! This was a marathon 34-hours of listening to the Audible narration. (The narrator is excellent, by the way.) I have enjoyed all of the books in this series. As she did with the Harry Potter series, JK Rowling is a master of building entire societies. In this case, it is the cultish Universal Humanitarian Church (UHC). Whole sections of the book are devoted to the workings of the church, the lectures/sermons of its charismatic leader, and the farm where members of the church live and work. Detectives Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellicot are hired to get someone out of the farm. Robin goes undercover as a new convert and experiences all that the "church" has to offer--both the good and the bad. Meanwhile, Cormoran interviews ex-members of the UHC and eventually the two detectives piece together the secrets of the cult. As always with the Stike series, I was drawn in to the story and cared about many of the characters and their outcomes.

A Personal Version of the History of the 1960s

This was my era and I was intrigued by this personal look at the Kennedy-Johnson years by a couple who were close to the action. The best part of listening to this rather than reading it, was the inclusion of clips of the actual speeches of John and Robert Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. As I listened, I recalled many of the events described and how they affected me. For those who didn't personally experience those years, it may be less interesting, but it still provides an excellent history of the times. Especially impressive was Kearns Goodwin's recounting of Johnson's Great Society. In my opinion, Johnson was among the greatest presidents this country has had. Unfortunately, the Vietnam War interrupted the important work he was doing to make America a great country, focused on equality and minimal standards of living for all. The author was an adequate narrator, but I didn't find her to be a great one.

An Interesting Novel but not a Mystery

This was billed as a "page turner," which it definitely was not. It took me a while to get into the story as the focus of the narration shifted often as did the dates of the action. While that technique worked over all to tell the story, it was not easy to follow. I would get interested in one story line and then the narration would abruptly switch to another one. I did finish the book and overall found it to be a good story. There is a mystery and there are detectives, but it was rather weak as a "mystery."

I eagerly downloaded and listened to this National Book Award winner and must admit to being underwhelmed. The idea of writing the Huck Finn story from the perspective of the enslaved Jim was a great one. Many of my friends, and the critics, have loved this book, but it just didn't shine for me. It is good, a solid example of story-telling, and a heart-rending version of the life of enslaved peoples in the US before the Civil War.

Long and Depressing

Kristin Hannah writes novels about women in difficult situations. This historical look at life in the Texas Panhandle during the Dust Bowl and then about the plight of the "Okies" who fled to California was just a long, depressing slog with a very occasional bright spot. My mother was among those Okies, so I have grown up with stories about how difficult the times were. But this story was just unrelentingly depressing. After reading "The Women" and a couple other Hannah titles, I think I am finished with her as an author. (The narrator did a terrific job.)

Unlike the previous novels in this series, this one moves slowly until the last part. I've read or listened to many of Kate Atkinson's books and typically I like them, but this one was not up to your usual standards.

I read and listen to a lot of books, at least 50 a year, and I am a fairly tough critic, so when I say this was a marvelous story I hope I have some credibility. This short novel was beautifully written and the characters were well drawn. The basic story line is pretty straightforward: a Scottish pastor who is struggling to make ends meet, takes a job of going to an island to tell the last inhabitant that he must move. That resident has forged a life alone, after all his family have either died or left, eking out a subsistance. The pastor is gravely injured, found by the island resident, and nurtured back to health. It is relationship that develops between these two men that makes this such a moving story.

Very little has been written about the women who served during the war in Vietnam. They play a significant and important role and deserve to be celebrated. This novel tells their story both while in Vietnam and after they returned home.

Not Krueger's Best

I have read and enjoyed many of Krueger's books--both the Cork Conran mysteries and the 1950s Minnesota books. This was a sort of combination book, a murder mystery set in the 1950s with a coming-of-age story woven in. It was OK, but I didn't love it. I found it rather preachy and contrived. The narration was fine but variable. Sometimes the reader's voice dropped so low that I missed things.
