Dealing with a counterfeit operation from her ancestor's memory and her own issues in the present, the streetwise Aliyah Kahn finds herself in the fight between assassins and Templars in return for the recouping of funds stolen by a former partner. While the cast is excellent in their roles, the overall story is a bit slow and boring. While we do get glimpses of Aliyah's past and thoughts, they often feel a bit out of place in the narrative. It's something that felt a bit unnecessarily placed and might work better in writing. On the ancestors side, it feels like not much is happening. There isn't a lot of action and just seems like more action could have woven in so that both sides of the story, Omar's and Aliyah's, wouldn't have felt so lackluster. This Audible Original is definitely boosted by a stellar cast and crew.

I was originally interested in getting a copy of this story, despite having no prior knowledge of it, due to the fact that one of my favorite narrators, Susan Ericksen, was involved. I found myself really enjoying this audiobook. "The Empress Capsule" is a fun sci-fi space adventure with interesting characters. I haven't read many books like it so I think I'll definitely continue with this series, both on audio and in print.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I, unfortunately, didn't know about Michelle McNamara until after her death in 2016. That's pretty surprising for me since I'm such a consumer of true crime. I also didn't know about ERA, or the Golden State Killer, all the way here on the east coast. This book is a great introduction to the series of crimes and its victims. It's well written and informative. It's unfortunate that McNamara died before the GSK was caught in 2018, almost two years later.
