Nonstop action
Revisado: 05-10-24
This is a very well written story. The hero doesn't suffer from the unnecessary and unreasonable guilt that many other female heroes seem to be forced to endure. She reasonably doesn't feel guilty when she has to hurt the people who are trying to kill her. That was refreshing. The story is constantly moving. I loved the pace. Then to top it all off, Bahni Turpin does an amazing job as always. I am starting the next book in the series today.

It's not your fault.
Revisado: 04-23-24
I was frustrated with the issue of the female hero feeling guilty about absolutely everything and not being able to kill anyone at all, even if it meant that she or her friends would die when I read the first book. It really is a good story that is well told, even if it is a bit derivative. My only problem is that of the soft female hero who can't make the hard choices. It doesn't make sense. She is bold enough and strong enough and determined enough to take on The System, but not to leave behind someone who has betrayed her? It doesn't make sense. However, the series is a solid dystopian series. It has interesting characters, a unique system of government, multiple villians, and moves at a good pace. The authors world building skills cannot be questioned. I visited Eden and walked its streets. He also did a good job of not creating one dimensional characters. He gives you a complete view of the prominent characters and their motivations. Great book. Great series. Vut hopefully next time the girl can kill something or punch something or leave something behind without being torn apart emotionally.

No caution?!?
Revisado: 03-06-24
Rowan does so many silly, incomprehensible things. I don't want to make any spoiling statements. But at some point, you have to learn that you can't trust everyone, especially the people chasing you during the dang old chase! Story could have been really good, but she suffers from Silly Clueless Girl Syndrome. It is absolutely exhausting. She should have been killed as a result of her own idiocy so many times. I finished it because when I initially started it, I stopped due to this issue. I waited too long to return it, so I figured that I would finish it. Why can't female heros be smart enough to ignore their continuous guilt for EVERYTHING and an unreasonable need to save the enemy. Then, the book doesn't end. It tees up the sequal. Ugh.

This book is well written and authentic. The storyline is complex enough to entertain an adult, yet simple enough to be followed and understood by precocious children. I am reading this entire series ine after the other and I have not veen disappointed, yet.

Original Narrator was Better
Revisado: 06-13-22
As soon as I finished the first book, I bought this one and began it. This story was just as good, maybe even better without the Girl Guilt. (Why do kick-butt girl heroes always have to feel so much guilt about saving the world?) This story line is great. The world remains consistent. Over the course of the story, you can see the characters grow in a believable way, just as you would expect someone of their age and maturity. My ONLY gripe with the book is that the narrator does a terrible job with the voices. The original narrator did the voices so well. They matched up to the characters. However, all the voices sounded virtually the same to me. Accents were lacking and at times, I couldn't distinguish between the main character's voice and the other characters. if there is a 3rd book in this series, hopefully they will go with either the original narrator or someone else. This narrator does nothing for this really good story.

Well done
Revisado: 06-01-22
This was a fantastic story. The world the author creates is clear and well defined. Moreover, the author never strays from the rules of her world with each character's actions being what one could logically expect those characters to do. The main character is a heroine without the excessive amount of guilt that authors often write into female heroes. However, she is not with conscience. The characters have very difficult experiences, but those are not the entirety of their experiences throughout the book. Plus, where I often feel as if I can see everything coming in even some of the best books, this book kept the surprise and excitement coming from beginning to the end. Immediately after finishing this book, I purchased the next in the series. If you like science fiction, strong female characters, diversity without being beaten over the head with it, choose this book.

Could have a little less girl guilt
Revisado: 05-24-22
I really enjoyed this book. It has so much diversity in it's characters without shouting about how diverse each character is. The story is captivating and I ran through books one and two in less than a week. The world rules were consistent and made sense throughout the story. There were also unanswered questions making me excited about the next book, but no lame cliff hanger forcing me to wait for the next book.
My only complaint, which I see often in scifi books with strong, fighting women, is the unnecessary level of guilt that the women seem to always carry with, even when it is clear as day that whatever they feel guilty about wasn't their fault or just couldn't be helped. It weakens the character and falls into a pattern that this book's storyline, with all of its diversity and refusal to lean on stereotypes, should just be above. She shouldn't feel guilty about everything. And again, a common trait in books with string, butt-kicking women and girls. But other than that I would definitely buy this book again.

Historia
In South Africa, the future looks promising. Personal robots are making life easier for the working class. The government is harnessing renewable energy to provide infrastructure for the poor. And in the bustling coastal town of Port Elizabeth, the economy is booming thanks to the genetic engineering industry that has found a welcome home there. Yes, the days to come are looking very good for South Africans. That is, if they can survive the present challenges.
