Excellent
Revisado: 05-07-21
It's hilarious how many reviews have been posted stating how offended the readers are by the "politics" included in this book. As if the well-documented fact that the former president lied repeatedly over his 4-year term and endangered the lives of millions by ignoring the seriousness of COVID has no place in our collective history and cultural knowledge. This information was discussed during the jury selection process and was not intrusive or offensive. Regardless of which political party you're a member of, we all know that Trump's followers have garnered a certain profile. Lawyers know this, and obviously are going to attempt to select people for their jury based on political affiliation as that says a great deal about the person's worldview. It would be even more surprising if Haller was not true to character and didn't speak candidly about what he's looking for on a jury. If one is personally offended by this, perhaps this book is not for you.

Historia
Although the Stock Market had crashed recently, it was too early for most people to predict that the Great Depression was about to get underway. For 39-year-old spinster schoolteacher Hildegarde Withers, it’s business as usual. And part of her usual business is taking her class for an outing to the aquarium to see the penguins. Instead, she spots the floating corpse of Wall Street broker Gerald Lester and quickly realizes that Inspector Oscar Piper of NYPD Homicide isn’t up to solving this tricky case.

Narrator Really Brings the Whole Story Down...
Revisado: 05-20-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The story (albeit a bit jarring in its racial bias and sexism) is a very well written old-school mystery; written, not set, in the 1930's. Unfortunately, this great story was incredibly let-down by the narrator. I mean, she is truly distracting and laughably bad. The male voices are the worst--with accents that make one cringe, but the pacing for all the voices is strange--I noticed that some people sped her up to 2x, I hadn't thought of that. Her pronunciation of some words is ridiculous... "sizzle" instead of "sisal", "dash-ed" instead of "dashed". Overall, I'm seriously trying to decide if I even want to finish the book, I spend so much time talking out-loud in the car mocking the narrator, that I've pretty much lost all perspective on this book. I seriously will avoid all books read by Julie McKay in the future. How she even got this job is a mystery to me! I honestly can't believe the book's producer listened to this performance and thought "Yup, sounds great to me!" and published it! So, while I really like this book, I'm done with this series because the same narrator is used for all the books.
Would you be willing to try another one of Julie McKay’s performances?
No. I really cannot listen to another book read by this person.

Mary Handley is a not your typical late-nineteenth century lady. She's fiery, clever, daring—and she’s not about to conform to the gender norms of the day. Not long after being fired from her job at the hat factory for insubordinate behavior, Mary finds herself at the murder scene of Charles Goodrich, the brother of a prominent alderman and former bookkeeper of Thomas Edison.

Exasperating heroine--I'm rooting for the killer!
Revisado: 10-23-15
Overly confident and self-congratulatory, Mary has little more decernable empathy than the hired gun only known as "bowler hat" (seriously??) Almost every character is a 2-d, trite stereotype, about whom you could not care less!!

Story is OK...but narration is....weak
Revisado: 10-30-14
What didn’t you like about Anna Bentinck’s performance?
The voices that this narrator produces for the various characters ranges from weak to ludicrous. Her voices for the female characters are truly embarrassing and incredibly distracting--they almost have to be heard to be believed. Honestly, I kept thinking it will get better...but every new character has an even more ridiculous voice and inflection, it truly causes one to be so distracted that the story is ruined.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
There are way too many references to prior books by the author, it makes the first few chapters awkward.

WORST Narrator EVER
Revisado: 05-19-11
I want to preface this review by saying that I've NEVER written a negative review for any book I've ordered from Audible over the years. I've enjoyed most of them throughly.
Frankly, I don't know exactly how this book ends...I don't even know what happens in the middle...The narrator is so horrible that you almost cannot believe the annoyance you'll feel at the vocal pacing, the world's worst southern accents, and the absolutely freakish way she pronounces some of these words. NO ONE talks like this, and you'll not get through the first chapter before you'll hear exactly what I'm talking about. I found myself shouting at her--and so disconnected from the story that I couldn't ditch this book fast enough. I felt foolish for having such strong feelings about a book (and a person I've never met)...but the reality is, you're looking to spend about $20, and 8 hours of your life with this person, supposedly entertaining yourself--if the narrator is so bad that you become angry, you should RUN AWAY-- what a waste of money and time.
