Short, sweet, to the point, and a fantastic balance between explorations of the science and history of caffeine. I feel as though I am now equipped to have a more healthy relationship with caffeine than ever before.

I wish I’d found this years ago, so I could have put an end to my slow suicide of self-induced hedonistic sleep deprivation sooner. Foolishly, I’ve always thought “tiredness” to be the sole consequence of poor sleep, with some vague knowledge of short nights having the effects of “taking years off your life.” With the technical explanations Walker lays out in this book, I now have a vastly improved grasp on how detrimental late nights are to my health, and I’m feeling vastly better after only a few days of full 8-hour nights. Please, if you don’t get a full 8 hours a night, read this book.

Mystifying and infuriating at turns, the most engrossing mystery I’ve read since A.C. Doyle.

This book is equal parts cruel reverse psychology game and sadistic Easter egg hunt, toying with your expectations and predictions, and then challenging you and the characters to make sense of the hellish circumstances they find themselves in.

The performances are fantastic, some of the best I’ve ever heard. This book is narrated in the first person by two different characters, one male and one female, and they are acted respectively by the proper gender. Without giving too much away, suffice it to say that both of these roles require a broad spectrum of emotion in their performances, and both actors absolutely shine.

If this sounds even remotely interesting to you, I implore you to pick this one up. Also, if you’ve only seen the movie, worry not, the depth of nuance and character development in this book is far more than even Fincher could do justice in 2.5 hours, so please give this a listen.

You won’t find anything particularly scientifically in-depth here, but you will find is a profound and sometimes moving conversational examination of how spending the extended periods of time in nature can measurably improve our well being.

While the performance was very disappointing to me (almost none of his accents for the characters were true to their voices in the game), it got the job done. As for the story: Nothing special here, but as a big Bioshock fan, it was very engrossing to see the founding of Rapture and the subterfuge in the years leading up to New Year's 1959, even if a solid third of the events in this book are just more detailed reenactments of events we hear about in audiologs in the game. I highly recommend this to anyone who counts Bioshock as one of their favorite games and wants to learn more about the lore, and everyone else should stay away.

Probably the first Clancy novel since Red Storm Rising that I didn’t absolutely adore. This one feels a bit like Debt of Honor, Red Storm Rising, and The Sum of All Fears put in a blender. The story and themes feel a bit tired, if still adrenaline-pumping throughout. Still, with all those fantastic ingredients, the end result is still a fantastic ride. Prichard’s narration is excellent as ever, his Chinese accent believable, but not cartoonish.

My ratings are subjective, obviously. I thought I was going to get a book all about economics, with interesting commentary on different economic phenomena. I guess that's sort of what I got, but I should've properly assumed that the phenomena wouldn't be very relatable to me, as the book was written in the 18th century. As someone with a cursory knowledge of economics and little interest in the history of finance, this book was exceedingly dry for me. It felt as though everything I heard was either something I already knew, or some piece of information completely irrelevant to me as someone living in the 21st century.

Don't get this unless a dry, in-depth foray into the economic plights of 18th century Europe sounds interesting to you.

A methodical, ever-quickening trip up the precipice of a rollercoaster drop as are all Clancy novels, this tale of the transition between conventional and anti-terrorist warfare and espionage is as thrilling today as it was when I first read it a decade ago, and I'd imagine, as much as the day it was published. Prichard is fantastic as ever, his even-toned narration bringing out character emotion and interesting accents whenever appropriate, without ever feeling contrived.

Easily the most impactful and succinct stoic book I've read to date, full of anecdotes and parables that I can relate directly to my own experiences and lifestyle almost two millennia after its writing. The performance is outstanding, fatherly and friendly, somber when necessary, but never cold or didactic.

This book is a cross between an autobiography and a self-help book, with little science within to back up its claims. That said, it's a kick in the pants to all of us and a reminder of a fact we all know to be fundamentally true: Pain is endemic to the human experience, and if we are to accomplish anything in our lifetimes, we must embrace it with open arms, and if we wish to be truly great, we must *pursue* it.

The hybrid podcast/audiobook format was a bit jarring at first, but it didn't prove too distracting as the book went on, and it helped familiarize me with the author, as Goggins doesn't actually read the book himself. All in all, I highly recommend to any fans of 12 Rules For Life or The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck.
