Historia
Howard Zinn, author of A People's History of the United States, tells his personal stories about more than 30 years of fighting for social change, from teaching at Spelman College to recent protests against war. A former bombardier in World War II, Zinn emerged in the civil rights movement as a powerful voice for justice. Although he's a fierce critic, he gives us reason to hope that by learning from history and engaging politically, we can make a difference in the world.

mind blowing
Revisado: 11-27-19
Howard Zinn was one of life's special gifts. He was the ultimate American. He teaches us to love our country but not through militarism, parades and war victories but rather through the challenging of our government to be better and answer to the lies it has forced down our throats. There are times, while listening to this book, that I became very angry with our treatment of human beings yet Dr. Zinn always spoke optimistically about hope and compassion and always felt that our nation could one day be a kind, accepting and charitable to the entire world if we just try harder.

SHOCKING & DISGRACEFUL(not the book. The subject)
Revisado: 08-20-14
This is not a blemish. Instead, this is an open wound in America and it doesn't seem to want
to heal.
It makes me angry to have to become aware of this at age 49. As a kid, I was always curious why my African-American friends all lived "North" or on "The other side of the train tracks". Now I know why. It angers and embarrasses me.
Professor Loewen's book is a must read for all Americans-white or black.
But mostly for white!

Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

Absolutely great! Very important read for anybody who thinks they know everything
about our greatest President and anybody who wishes to learn about mental illness.
The book is told in sort of a lecture like presentation but then after a few minutes, you feel as if the writer( Mr. Shenk ) and the narrator (Mr. Davidson) are talking to YOU personally.
I listened to this every day on my way to work and hated when I arrived there. Couldn't wait to head home, to get back into this wonderful book.
Enjoy-

Historia
On May 13, 1945, 24 American servicemen and WACs boarded a transport plane for a sightseeing trip over “Shangri-La,” a beautiful and mysterious valley deep within the jungle-covered mountains of Dutch New Guinea. Unlike the peaceful Tibetan monks of James Hilton’s best-selling novel Lost Horizon, this Shangri-La was home to spear-carrying tribesmen, warriors rumored to be cannibals. But the pleasure tour became an unforgettable battle for survival when the plane crashed. Miraculously, three passengers pulled through.

Zacks’s meticulous research and wonderful sense of narrative verve bring this disparate cast of both pious and bawdy New Yorkers to life. With cameos by Stephen Crane, J. P. Morgan, and Joseph Pulitzer, plus a horde of very angry cops, Island of Vice is an unforgettable portrait of turn-of-the-century New York in all its seedy glory, and a brilliant portrayal of the energetic, confident, and zealous Roosevelt, one of America’s most colorful public figures.

Thought it would be better than it was.
Revisado: 09-21-12
I've always been fascinated with the life of T.R. But this book, although deep in facts, is a little boring. Not the author's fault. It's just a very boring period in the life of Teddy.
He comes off sounding more like Rudolph Guilliani in his pre-9-11 years, then he does when he took on the big corporations and the Anti-trust battles at the turn of the century.
Overall, kind of blah.

James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Revisado: 10-24-11
This is a incredible piece of American history in which Ms.Millard delivers with brilliancy.
I never thought she would be able to top her "RIver of Doubt"( Teddy Roosevelt's journey down the Amazon River) but, she does here. This is an entertaining, sad, but all the time, interesting story of a forgotten President. Highly recommended if you love American history.
Other than the shooting at the hands of Charles Guiteau and brutal treatment by his own doctors, the only thing sadder is how we as a nation, were robbed of James Garfield and how he could have offered so much to our nation. Thanks to Ms. Millard, our 20th president has now become a new hero of mine.
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! I ENJOYED IT IMMENSELY!

Historia
Set against the backdrop of the Civil War, The Assassin's Accomplice tells the gripping, true story of the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln through the eyes of its only female participant, the first woman ever to be executed by the federal government of the United States.
Mary Surratt, a Confederate sympathizer, ran the boardinghouse in Washington where the conspirators, including her rebel son, John Surratt, met to plan the assassination.
The depth of Surratt's complicity in the assassination of President Lincoln has been debated since the day she was arrested on April 17, 1865.

Assassin's Accomplice
Revisado: 08-02-11
I feel as if I wasted several hours of my life listening to this boring text book-like story.
The author brought nothing new to the table. Mrs Surratt is as guilty as the first book I ever read about her, yet somehow, this book was sold to me as some new important evidence to support
her innocence. In short, weak and un-entertaining. I almost drove my car off a cliff numerous times listening to this book. I'd like my money back please.

This dramatic account of the War of 1812 fills a surprising gap in the popular literature of the nation's formative years. It is this war, followed closely on the War of Independence, that established the young nation as a permanent power and proved its claim to Manifest Destiny.
