Historia
The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

It's finally over!
Revisado: 12-14-22
Was totally worried this was going to be like Dragon Ball Z where Skippy just keeps leveling up and basically has the same fight over and over at implied greater levels of difficulty. But it's finally over and I can move on to some other audio book series.
If not for RC Bray's performance I probably would have given up on this series 7 books ago. This series dragged on way too long to the point where the outcome of the books was more or less completely predictable. But once you're in you're hooked until the end.

Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Great story, but Wil Wheaton?
Revisado: 04-10-22
I pretty much love everything John Scalzi writes, but Wil Wheaton's portrayal of the characters always seems to come off overly whiny and sarcastic.

Anticlimactic
Revisado: 04-02-22
Phil Thron is great as usual, but the story just didn't do it. Without giving away spoilers it just seems like whenever Zed gets into a complicated situation and it's going to get really interesting the author just gives up and throws in a quick Deus Ex Machina and wraps it up.

The problem with lying about having a super weapon is that the bad guys might believe they have nothing to lose by doing something stupid that both sides will regret. Or, they might just call your bluff. Either way, the Merry Band of Pirates need a plan to deal with the Fallout.

Will it ever end?
Revisado: 12-18-21
Loved this series when it started, but now it's just getting dragged out way too long. I can barely even remember half the plot points being referenced anymore, the story is getting way over complicated, and there are non sequitors or places where Mr. Alanson seems to have forgotten what he was writing or just needed some fill material. I keep listening just because I keep hoping that this book will finally be the conclusion and keep getting disappointed, if not for RC Bray I'd have given up on this series 5 books ago.

Historia
You think you’re struggling to find your place in the universe? Consider poor old Colin Douglass, a terminally ill insurance agent who awakens from centuries in cryogenic freeze to find Earth is a devastated wasteland. Now, he’s being pursued by a homicidal interstellar tourist board, and calculating insurance dividends is as outdated as making stone axes. Sci-fi-hating technophobe Colin seeks a cure for his illness in this strange new galaxy where toilets talk back, and door handles are a long-forgotten relic.

Starts Strong but Weak Ending
Revisado: 08-01-21
Started out with a very Hitchhikers vibe. Was really looking forward to this, and the narrator really got into it, I was almost looking forward to the sequel and exploring the wider galaxy until the ending basically made it apparent that the next book would just be a rehash of the same plot.

Historia
For generations, the solar system—Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt—was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The alien artifact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has appeared in Uranus's orbit, where it has built a massive gate that leads to a starless dark. Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships going out to examine the artifact. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core.

Great story, but beware if you drink Scotch.
Revisado: 04-20-21
It's a great story and I wish I'd listened to this before seeing the TV series. The only problem I had with it is that the author doesn't seem to know anything about Scotch. It can't be called Scotch if it's not made in Scotland and any real Scotch drinker would be mortified by the idea of doing shots of expensive Scotch. If you can ignore the absolutely ludicrous blunder of having "Belter Scotch" it's a good listen.

Too Much Detail
Revisado: 06-16-20
Have enjoyed a lot of this series, RC Bray is a fantastic narrator, but this book has way too much detail, not enough dialogue, and is just too hard to get through. ExForce is a lot of fun but this one just isn't very good.
In a scene describing combat and landing troops on the planet, what should take seconds in real life takes an unbearably long time as the author describes the technical details of launching ships and alien military protocols and tactics. The suspense is lost on overly long descriptions and it's hard to stay interested when the dialogue between characters is so brief.
The early ExForce books I couldn't stop listening to, but this one I just had to call it about 1/4 of the way in because the story just couldn't make me care if the main characters live or die.

Historia
After the latest mission of the starship Flying Dutchman, Earth is safe not just for a year, but for hundreds of years. The ship’s weary crew wonders what they will do with their lives in peacetime, but the enemy has other plans, and there is danger on the Homefront. Starring Zachary Quinto, R.C. Bray, Kate Mulgrew, Robert Picardo, and everyone's favorite AI, Skippy the Magnificent, alongside a full cast. Includes plenty of pew-pew-pew, original sound composition, and maybe some singing by R.C. Bray.

Why?
Revisado: 10-15-19
Decent story, but awful production. Can we just go back to having RC Bray perform solo?
Most of the voices (meaning everyone not RC Bray) were done half-hearted or half-assed. Even Zachary Quinto's performance sounded like he phoned it in. On top of that the whole thing was overloaded with poorly chosen music and bad sound effects. Not just bad effects but poorly timed or unnecessary ones and way too many repetitive sounds that just made the half-assed acting more annoying.
I almost didn't finish it but I kind of had to in getting ready for Armageddon.
Why Audible? Why?

Somehow the Books Keep Getting Better
Revisado: 07-19-19
Not quite sure how he does it, but Barry Hutchinson keeps putting out fun books. I keep expecting the next book in this series to be the one where I get tired of Cal Carver's misadventures or when it finally gets old but the jokes keep me laughing and the plot twists remain surprising. Add on top of that Phil Thron's narration with all the fantastic voices and somehow, against all logic, this series is actually getting better the longer it goes.
