Historia
After a fishing accident leaves her husband hospitalized across the border in Canada, Jill is left to look after her teenage boys—"the wolves"—alone. Nothing comes easy in their remote corner of Maine: money is tight; her son Sam is getting into more trouble by the day; her eldest, Charlie, is preoccupied with a new girlfriend; and Jill begins to suspect her marriage isn't as stable as she once believed.

Almost needs a trigger warning for parents of teenagers!
Revisado: 08-21-24
This book felt so true to life that I was actually short with my teenage son in reaction to the book! Rebecca Lowman is my favorite reader for all the reasons and she was perfect for this lovely glimpse into a family in what felt like almost mundane turmoil.

Historia
Barnett Durang has a secret. No, not THAT secret. His widowed mother has long known he’s gay. The secret is Barnett is getting married. At his mother’s farm. In their small Louisiana town. She just doesn’t know it yet. It’ll be an intimate affair. Just two hundred or so of the most fabulous folks Barnett is shipping in from the “heathen coasts,” as Mom likes to call them, turning her quiet rescue farm for misfit animals into a most unlikely wedding venue.

Sweet but drags
Revisado: 11-18-23
I enjoyed parts of this but the narrator mispronounced Lafitte and things got very saccharine and slow in the last 2 hrs.

Historia
It is the year 1814, and life for a young lady of good breeding has many difficulties. There are balls to attend, fashions to follow, marriages to consider, and, of course, the tiny complication of existing in a world swarming with fairy spirits, interfering deities, and actual straight-up sorcerers.

A little tedious
Revisado: 07-08-23
Too much anticipation and traveling to and fro with no progression made the story feel too dragged out, but Alexis Hall does always have delightful characters and Lizzie was my fave!

Wonderful performance!
Revisado: 04-26-23
Love against the odds with an absolutely perfect performance! High drama and war and daisy chains - I described it as a “horny Wolf Hall.”

Liv Varanakis doesn’t have a lot of fond memories of her father, which makes sense - he fled to Greece when she was only eight. What Liv does remember, though, is their shared love for Greek myths and the lost city of Atlantis. So when Liv suddenly receives a postcard from her father explaining that National Geographic is funding a documentary about his theories on Atlantis - and will she fly out to Greece and help? - Liv jumps at the opportunity.

No surprises. Frustratingly boring. Not even the Greek location added intrigue. I did want to eat the birthday cake, though.

Boring and half-baked
Revisado: 07-11-22
I didn't have super high expectations as I got this from an Audible sale, but it was slow and the characters made choices that did not make any sense with what we were already told about them. It did make me want to go on an island vacation, though!

I appreciated the glimpses at Indian culture but the romance felt sort of flat. And it was very frustrating to feel that Wade was lying for no real reason.

Historia
If falling in love is the peak of human experience, then marriage is the slow descent down that mountain, on a trail built from conflict, compromise, and nagging doubts. Considering the limited economic advantages to marriage, the deluge of other mate options a swipe away, and the fact that almost half of all marriages in the United States end in divorce anyway, why do so many of us still chain ourselves to one human being for life?

Big disappointment!
Revisado: 08-19-21
I loved Beth O'Leary's previous novels so much and could not wait to listen to this one. I don't want to write spoilers, but I definitely spent the whole book expecting some dark Talented Mr. Ripley style twist that never came. I couldn't root for anyone except for maybe Kevin, the magical lorrie driver. I will continue to read Beth O'Leary's books, because The Flatshare was SO GOOD, but all should feel free to skip this one.
