Historia
After saving the world many times, the Merry Band of Pirates have accepted the inevitable: Earth is doomed. All they can do is try to bring a few thousand people to safety, before vicious aliens arrive to destroy humanity's home world. No. There is one other thing they can do: hit the enemy so hard that the aliens will regret they ever heard of humans.

This isn't a book series. It's a soap opera.
Revisado: 02-14-20
This story might never go anywhere. I've felt this way since Book 3. Yet I'm still here. I guess I'm back for the characters. Like someone who watches a soap opera. Nothing ever advances or changes. You always end up back at equilibrium.
I've made my peace with this series though. I enjoyed this one more than most. The dynamic between Joe & Skippy has never been more fleshed out and multi-dimensional. That monkey shtick had become beyond dull. This is much better.
As for the "cliff hanger". If you don't think that'll be resolved in 10 minutes at the start of the next book, you've really not been paying attention.

Historia
In the 23rd century, humanity is enjoying a comparative utopia. Yet life on Earth is about to change forever. Feriton Kane’s investigative team has discovered the worst threat ever to face mankind, and we’ve almost no time to fight back. The supposedly benign Olyix plan to harvest humanity, in order to carry us to their god at the end of the universe. And as their agents conclude schemes down on earth, vast warships converge above to gather this cargo. Some factions push for humanity to flee, to live in hiding amongst the stars, although only a chosen few would make it out in time.

Much Better Than The Last One
Revisado: 11-25-19
I wasn't mad about the first book. This is better. (Not a spoiler) Actually the best bit is the stuff with the High Flyer.
I still mix up some of the guys from the assessment team apart from the Scottish guy which is a bit weak.
A lot of hate for John Lee in the reviews ? Maybe the American ear doesn't suit his voice but I think he & Hamilton go together like rejuvenation clinics and enzyme bonded concrete.

Historia
For short-lived races like humans, space is dominated by the complicated, grandiose Mercatoria. To the Dwellers who may live billions of years, the galaxy consists of their gas-giant planets - the rest is debris. Fassin Taak is a Slow Seer privileged to work with the Dwellers of the gas-giant Nasqueron. His work consists of rummaging for data in their vast, disorganised memories and libraries. Unfortunately, without knowing it, he's come close to an ancient secret of unimaginable importance.

I'm really struggling to focus on this book.
All of the themes I've encountered in other places - maybe he did them first. I don't know but they're done better elsewhere.
Hamilton & Reynolds are my go to guys & I've been meaning to check out Banks for ages. Going by this though . . .

Historia
After the Renegade mission by the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman, the UN Expeditionary Force thought Earth was safe for hundreds of years, at least. After there was trouble on the home front and the president had to authorize a nuclear strike on an American city, UNEF decided they did need the Merry Band of Pirates again. So, the Flying Dutchman is sent out on a simple recon mission. But for the pirates, nothing is ever simple, and their mission will become Armageddon.

At this point, only a fool would be surprised to be getting more of exactly the same. I guess if part of me didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't still be listening to it.
I didn't appreciate the confusing refs to the audioplay or the side series - I'm not listening to them.

Days ago, Belisarius pulled off the most audacious con job in history. He's rich, he's back with the love of his life, and best of all, he has the Time Gates, arguably the most valuable things in existence. Nothing could spoil this...except the utter destruction of his people and the world they lived on. To save them, he has to make a new deal with the boss he just double-crossed, to travel back in time and work his quantum magic once again, tracking down the source of the wormholes.

Very Good But I Don't Like It
Revisado: 11-06-19
Much like the first one, it's very clever stuff but feels . . . sterile. There isn't a great deal of warmth in the book.
Like the first book, the elaborate names of people, places & ships add confusion and not much else.
Two characters (I wouldn't even guess at spelling their names) go on a mission together. Zero rapport develops between them
The writer is clearly a very intelligent guy & the science aspects are top notch and interesting.

Historia
The second volume of Sir Philip Pullman’s The Book of Dust sees Lyra, now 20 years old, and her daemon Pantalaimon, forced to navigate their relationship in a way they could never have imagined, and drawn into the complex and dangerous factions of a world that they had no idea existed. Pulled along on his own journey too is Malcolm: once a boy with a boat and a mission to save a baby from the flood, now a man with a strong sense of duty and a desire to do what is right.

I Didn't Love It
Revisado: 11-06-19
Missing a lot of the charm shining from La Belle Sauvage
Not a great deal happens
Once upon a time not having a daemon was unthinkable now it's everywhere.
Lyra goes on a journey bouncing from one person who helps her to another
Political Commentary is very thinly veiling (The evil petrol company is called TP)
Malcolm's position is borderline disturbing

Historia
When linguist Andrew Dennison is yanked from his bed by the Secret Service and taken to a top secret facility in the desert, he has no idea he's been brought there to translate the words of an ancient demon. He joins pretty but cold veterinarian Sun Jones, eccentric molecular biologist Dr. Frank Belgium, and a hodge-podge of religious, military, and science personnel to try and figure out if the creature is, indeed, Satan. But things quickly go bad, and very soon Andy isn't just fighting for his life, but the lives of everyone on earth…

I couldn't Do More Than 4 Hours.
Revisado: 06-22-19
The sound effects for the devil's voice are awful. Proper terrible. At times I couldn't understand it but more than that, it's unpleasant and not in a way that adds to the story. It just makes you want to turn it off.
The premise is what grabbed me but at every decision fork, the author chose the least interesting option.

Historia
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

Thoroughly Entertaining
Revisado: 06-22-19
Really takes its time. Taylor goes into the logistics of project planning much like he does in Bobiverse which I really enjoy.
Characters go out of their way not to be dumb cliches just to progress the plot which was so refreshing.
Only issue : I thought the first coffee "joke" was jarring and forced. The following 50 were progressively worse. Some people liking coffee is not funny.

Historia
Thousands of years ago, Earth’s terraforming program took to the stars. On the world they called Nod, scientists discovered alien life - but it was their mission to overwrite it with the memory of Earth. Then humanity’s great empire fell, and the program’s decisions were lost to time. Aeons later, humanity and its new spider allies detected fragmentary radio signals between the stars. They dispatched an exploration vessel, hoping to find cousins from old Earth. But those ancient terraformers woke something on Nod better left undisturbed. And it’s been waiting for them.

BEYOND Excellent
Revisado: 06-02-19
There isn't more riveting or intriguing Sci-Fi. Like the first book in this series, the writer's ability to conjure truly alien perspectives is incredible. This is intelligent Sci-Fi. A rare treat.
There was an issue with the playback though if anyone at Audible is reading this. I downloaded it three times & put it on my iPod but it cut out each time with an hour left. I was able to stream it directly to finish it & I wouldn't ask for a refund on this book but would like to have it stored on my device. Please fix it.

Historia
Belisarius is a quantum man, an engineered Homo quantus who fled the powerful insight of dangerously addictive quantum senses. He found a precarious balance as a con man, but when a client offers him untold wealth to move a squadron of warships across an enemy wormhole, he must embrace his birthright to even try. In fact, the job is so big that he'll need a crew built from all the new sub-branches of humanity. If he succeeds, he might trigger an interstellar war, but success might also point the way to the next step of Homo quantus evolution.

Pretty Good Though Sometimes Confusing.
Revisado: 05-19-19
It's a fleshed out & interesting universe Kunsken has create but I did sometimes feel lost in it. The logistics and origin of the wormhole system is vague until very late in the day. I just assumed it would be left over technology from an incredibly advanced but extinct civilisation - a common trope - and of course it was the case. Of course.
Not to be overly negitive however. Characters were fleshed out & The Puppets are eerily alien. Some very interesting ideas here.
The elaborate names of people, places and ships were unnecessarily confusing and legitimately made the plot difficult to follow at times.
