Love is not the simple thing that novels and poetry speak of. It is by turns subtle and overwhelming. It may slip silently into your heart, or strike like a bolt of lightning.

Sweet wholesome read
Revisado: 05-03-24
I really appreciated this book, the author gave me a lot to think about in how she solved various issues from the original that makes me rethink certain characters. I really appreciated the view of how the Bennett parents could have done things differently, that was a welcome surprise and very well done. The book was a bit of a slow start but picked up after a while.
This book is kind of like "if people in the original book got their shit together and things turned out fairly for everyone". Lovely read.

Well-written spooky stories
Revisado: 04-21-24
I discovered this podcast recently and have been binging it for days. The stories are really good, just the right amount of spooky. It's like Are You Afraid of the Dark for grown ups.

Great stories, bad narration
Revisado: 01-22-24
Holly Black is my favorite author and I was excited to read an anthology of stories by her. She reads the book herself, I saw other reviews saying it was bad and I agree. She sounds bored with her own work. There's hardly any inflection, and all the characters' voices sound the same. I hope her next audiobook will be read by a professional like her other books are. All in all I still listened through to the end because the stories are worth it.

Liked the story, hate the love interest
Revisado: 06-26-22
The love interest is such a jerk to the main character sometimes. He gets irrationally angry and talks down to her more than once...like when she thinks she has to invite him in, or when she wonders aloud what she would "taste" like if he bit her (he's a vampire). Plus he has a reputation for being disrespectful to women...you don't get that kind of reputation just for insisting on opening doors for people. Plus he's super stuffy. If he wasn't so attractive he could easily be mistaken for someone's grandfather. Great writing, good story, but just can't stand the love interest.

Ahmad is a jinni, a restless creature of fire, once free to roam the desert but now imprisoned in the shape of a man. Fearing they’ll be exposed as monsters, these magical beings hide their true selves and try to pass as human - just two more immigrants in the bustling world of 1900s Manhattan. Great writing, ending was unsatisfying
Revisado: 11-26-21
This book is more a drama than a romance, ending leaves the reader sort of hanging. The story itself is great but I wouldn't say it was enjoyable, it was too stressful and everyone in the book is cranky and upset the whole story.

Stressful dynamics between characters
Revisado: 11-01-20
I listen to this series for its popcorn fantasy appeal...spooky, nothing really terrible ever happens. I didnt enjoy the 'Ellie going up against mean evil corporation people' dynamic. Hopefully the next book has the series go back to normal.

Main character is *not like other girls*
Revisado: 06-29-20
I enjoy these spooky popcorn horror books that the author puts out. But I'm not a big fan of the main character. She's too cool and counter culture for pop music, or hobbies, or joy (referring to a joke in the book). The author barely conceals the main character's condescending views of everything her coworker likes...pop music, dressing up to go to nice dinners, getting excited about things, not being a cooler-than-though person all the time...when did it become such a crime for girls to like to look nice? I don't know why so many authors now write female characters like they're allergic to anything more complicated than jeans and chapstick...yet they always get the hottest guys in town. The main character just reeks of a "not like other girls" girl.
Also, the coworker is freaking smart and gets no love. She handles all the technology and is also super brave, but the author and main character remind us every 5 minutes how ditzy she is. Wish the author knew it's possible to wear makeup, listen to pop music, like pretty dresses, *and* be a total badass.
Anyway this is overall a great book, you should get it. The ending had me super intrigued and wanting to read the next one.

Long suffering woman raises man child
Revisado: 06-15-20
I didn't make it very far in this book. The writing is solid, the characters interesting, but the author completely lost me when the husband was introduced. I'm tired of reading stories about assholes who are turned into okay-ish men after a patient and sassy woman whips them into shape, Beauty and the Beast style. He told her she wasn't pretty ON THEIR WEDDING DAY after she had just been abandoned by her fiance and was totally heartbroken. I just have no interest in this story, but the writing is very good so many check out other stories by the author.

Historia
"The Near Witch" is only an old story told to frighten children. If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely and always looking for company. There are no strangers in the town of Near. These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life. But when an actual stranger, a boy who seems to fade like smoke, appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.

Too much "not like other girls"
