Page turner!
Revisado: 03-03-25
Honestly kept me guessing all the way. Bo & Alice both dealing with the skeletons of their closets, but in such different ways, with unexpected but satisfying consequences. Also, beautiful Cumbria always a great setting for a story. Great read.

Historia
When Mulanyin meets the beautiful Nita in Edenglassie, their saltwater people still outnumber the British. As colonial unrest peaks, Mulanyin dreams of taking his bride home to Yugambeh Country, but his plans for independence collide with white justice. Two centuries later, fiery activist Winona meets Dr Johnny. Together they care for obstinate centenarian Grannie Eddie, and sparks fly, but not always in the right direction. What nobody knows is how far the legacies of the past will reach into their modern lives.

This was a deep dive into a whole library of people and places and Lucashenko brought the stories and characters together across generations and places masterfully. I felt like I was watching time unravel. This was my first Lucashenko, now I can’t wait to read her other books.

Historia
The Salpêtrière asylum, 1885. All of Paris is in thrall to Doctor Charcot and his displays of hypnotism on women who have been deemed mad or hysterical, outcasts from society. But the truth is much more complicated - for these women are often simply inconvenient, unwanted wives or strong-willed daughters. Once a year, a grand ball is held at the hospital. For the Parisian elite, the Mad Women's Ball is the highlight of the social season; for the women themselves, it is a rare moment of hope.

Good read
Revisado: 11-19-23
The story is beautiful and so overdue. The style needs a little smoothing for my taste, but the characters were well developed from their historical counterparts. I was shocked to hear at the height of this asylum’s history it held 10,000 women. I hope Victoria Mas continues to unfold hidden women’s s history and tell many more overdue stories. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical novels.

Historia
In her remarkable stories of seemingly ordinary people living extraordinary lives, Miranda July reveals how a single moment can change everything. Whether writing about a middle-aged woman's obsession with Prince William, or an aging factory worker who has never been in love, the result is startling, sexy and tender by turns. One of the most acclaimed debuts of recent years, Miranda July is a brilliant new voice in fiction.

I loved this! It tastes of Werther’s Originals. The characters of these stories are beautifully woven together through a first person voice that observes and reflects an imposter perspective while at the same time reassuring me that these characters belong perfectly in their worlds. Also, I laughed out loud loads because it is just hilarious.

Traumatising
Revisado: 05-28-20
I wouldn’t give this book to a child under 13, or anyone fond of animals. It’s about an underage kid and his dad volunteering to go to WW1 with their horses, after the dad promised the dead mum he would not let their son enlist.
First the dad dies, then the kid’s friends die, then at the end of the war he has to shoot his own horse because the army will not bring it home. The kid has no family to return to. Even his dream girlfriend got engaged while he was away at war.
The treatment of the war horses is brutal and graphic. There is no happy ending, just desperate sadness and graphic violence.
It is beautifully read by the author, but you would have to be someone with no emotions to enjoy this book.

Historia
The art of love is never a science.: Meet Don Tillman, a brilliant yet socially inept professor of genetics, who’s decided it’s time he found a wife. In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which Don approaches all things, he designs The Wife Project to find his perfect partner: a 16-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late arrivers. Yet, Rosie Jarman possesses all these qualities and. Don easily disqualifies her as a suitable candidate (even if she is "quite intelligent for a barmaid").

A bit disappointed
Revisado: 02-27-19
In the first half of the book, lead character Don is portrayed in a childlike way that feels patronising. As Don becomes more self-aware, the characterisation takes on more depth and becomes an easier read. It’s very entertaining in parts, and I expect the 2nd and 3rd in the series to be more interesting than the first, as Don’s life becomes more complex.

Historia
Entering her thirties, Helen Jukes feels trapped in an urban grind of office politics and temporary addresses - disconnected, stressed. Struggling to settle into her latest job and home in Oxford, she realises she needs to effect a change if she’s to create a meaningful life for herself, one that can accommodate comfort and labour and love. Then friends give her the gift of a colony of honeybees - according to folklore, bees freely given bring luck - and Helen embarks on her first full year of beekeeping.

Revisado: 09-10-18
This isn’t a book I couldn’t put down, because it is dense so I enjoyed chewing on it one bite at a time. But I was really sad when it came to an end. A really beautifully told tale of a millennial and her bees. Well narrated. Definitely one I will enjoy over again.

Interesting read, well written & well narrated.
Revisado: 05-19-18
Cytowic’s book is really well structured, systematically introducing and integrating aspects of the synaesthetic experience using case studies. He walks through the history and present day perspectives of cognitive and psychological theories and the scientific evidence from neurobiology and genetics. Although it is very well narrated, I think I will be purchasing a print copy too as there’s so much interesting info to reference and review.
This is a great starting point to get an overview of synaesthesia, published at just the right time in history when neuroscience can revive a real scientific study of this phenomena and its relevance to so many aspects of perception, learning and the multiverse of neurodiversity.
