Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Atheistic, nihilistic pop culture psychology pablum
Revisado: 05-10-18
This book is only popular because of the “clickbait” profanity used in the title. A stunt book in every sense of the word. Pretends at profound knowledge but makes only tangential connections between the examples meant to buttress it’s meaningless, meandering missives. The author’s fear of death is palpable and confusing. Endings are hard, and by the time you reach the end you will be rooting for the author to fall off the cliff. The narration is also particularly bad, lapsing into weird voices, bad accents, and perhaps the worst Yoda impression you will ever hear. Skip this trip.

Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

Amazing true story of heroism and tragedy
Revisado: 05-13-17
I love books that make history come alive, and this is one of those books. Reading about the characters, the dangers that they faced, and their courage, I found myself rooting for them and concerned for their safety. A fascinating examination of this early exploration.

Historia
Here at Audible, we know just how much of an impact a voice can have on a story - taking simple words and filling them with elation, wonderment, tragedy, or pure satisfaction. We rely on our narrators every day to bring our favorite stories and characters to life - to introduce us to new authors and genres, or even to a new (perhaps longer) commute. And though our narrators are the best story tellers in the business, it's usually someone else's that they're telling.

Cop out for Christmas
Revisado: 12-28-16
Audible's free Christmas gifts (Christmas, I refuse to say happy holidays because it's Christmas) have never been stellar. This year's offering, though, was particularly disappointing. It is a crazy quilt of hastily thrown together holiday haranguing. This flotsam and jetsam of Thanksgiving and Christmas tales are interesting only to those who are telling the stories. The stories range in quality from mediocre to dreadful. It does provide some insight into how condescending and out of touch the average Audible book narrator is by listening to them wax eloquent on their humanistic and secular traditions. I would have preferred a lump of coal over the hideous and ill-fitting sweater that was this year's "gift".

Historia
For decades, the Left has been putting on a play with themselves as heroes in an ongoing civil rights movement - which they were mostly absent from at the time. Long after pervasive racial discrimination ended, they kept pretending America was being run by the Klan and that liberals were black America’s only protectors. It took the O. J. Simpson verdict - the race-based acquittal of a spectacularly guilty black celebrity as blacks across America erupted in cheers - to shut down the white guilt bank.

Historia
It was a pretty radical idea - a channel for teenagers, showing nothing but music videos. It was such a radical idea that almost no one thought it would actually succeed, much less become a force in the worlds of music, television, film, fashion, sports, and even politics. But it did work. MTV became more than anyone had ever imagined. I Want My MTV tells the story of the first decade of MTV, the golden era when MTV's programming was all videos, all the time, and kids watched religiously to see their favorite bands, learn about new music, and have something to talk about at parties.

For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

The high concept being pulled off well, and the codas complemented the story very well.
What three words best describe Wil Wheaton’s performance?
Obvious. Energetic. Adequate.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Neither laughter or tears, although others may do both.

Historia
Kevin Mitnick was the most elusive computer break-in artist in history. He accessed computers and networks at the world’s biggest companies—and however fast the authorities were, Mitnick was faster, sprinting through phone switches, computer systems, and cellular networks. He spent years skipping through cyberspace, always three steps ahead and labeled unstoppable.

Repetitive but entertaining
Revisado: 12-24-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The book was painfully unabridged! Every number, letter, acronym, and phone number were included. It got pretty tedious!
Would you recommend Ghost in the Wires to your friends? Why or why not?
I would. It was still interesting to learn about social engineering.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes, but the way the narrator drew out the profanity was tiresome and off putting.
Could you see Ghost in the Wires being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Possibly. Someone narcissistic should play Kevin. Narcissistic and fat, anyway.

Historia
The Shooting Salvationist chronicles what may be the most famous story you have never heard. In the 1920's, the Reverend J. Frank Norris railed against vice and conspiracies he saw everywhere to a congregation of more than 10,000 at First Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, the largest congregation in America, the first "megachurch".

Decent story marred by overwrought performance
Revisado: 09-16-12
Would you try another book from David R. Stokes and/or R. C. Bray?
I might try another book from David R. Stokes, but not by R. C. Bray. Too many ridiculous voices.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have selected a different narrator, or told this narrator to turn it down a notch with his caricatures...oops, I mean characterizations of the people in the story.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of R. C. Bray?
I don't know, but l not R. C. Bray.
What character would you cut from The Shooting Salvationist?
It is a factual story, so none of them.
Any additional comments?
The audio quality could have been better. The volume level would go up and down, especially when the narrator switched to one of his ridiculous and unnecessary voices. Also, the book seemed biased against Norris, and seemed surprised that the defense legal counsel would have the gall to actually defend their client. So strange.
