Too Short
Revisado: 06-19-19
I feel like the disclaimer took up 1/8 of the book. It was disappointing for the disclaimer to essentially say that nothing can be substantiated in the book and then the book itself was so short.

Same stuff as his original book.

Great concepts, and well developed material. However if you’ve read his original book, there is no significant departure from it here.

So well written, but easy to get lost
Revisado: 04-26-18
The author’s style is to meander to a mind blowing point. In which case it’s often tough to hang in there for the payoff. I only got through this because it was an audio book.

Historia
Vivian doesn't feel like she fits in - and never has. As a child, she was so whimsical that her parents told her she was "left by fairies". Now, she is living alone in Dublin, where the neighbors treat her like she's crazy, her older sister condescends to her, social workers seem to have registered her as troubled, and she hasn't a friend in the world. So, she decides it's time to change her life. She begins by advertising for a friend. Not just any friend. She wants one named Penelope.

Historia
What if you found a way to send something back in time? But not weeks, days, or even minutes back. What if you could only send something back a fraction of a second? Would this be of any use? You wouldn't have nearly enough time to right a wrong, change an event, or win a lottery. Nathan Wexler is a brilliant physicist who thinks he's found a way to send matter a split second back into the past. But before he can even confirm his findings, he and his wife-to-be, Jenna Morrison, find themselves in a battle for their very lives.

Good Idea, Not Artfully Done
Revisado: 09-21-17
The concept of the book is very interesting. However, the writing is at times cringe-worthy. I found myself rolling my eyes at other times. The story is interesting enough but it seems a little formulaic in a thriller/mystery way. It's the comfort food of science and action writing.

This book really captures the internal world in the way we all wished fantasy and fairytales affected us as children. Characters are deep and well developed. The writing is excellent. Don't pass on this one.

Any additional comments?
I received this book free in exchange for a review through audioblast. I've had my eye on this book for some time because of my enduring interest in comics. I had high hopes that this would be a book that showed the development of a supervillain character. I was looking forward to a book in the vein of Grossman's 2007 "Soon I Will Be Invincible".Unfortunately, the constant tawdry humor made the scenes that would deepen the character's context hard to engage in (for humor with development, see by David Wong's 2015, "Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits"). Furthermore, the world seemed a little underdeveloped, it was easy enough to get the idea for a society that embraces super-powered factions of good and evil, but I would have been interested in understanding more the structure of that society. This book may have been a fair read, but the narrator did not come through well. The main character is in constant dialogue with his telepathic cloak. However, the voices are so indistinguishable, I constantly had to pause and mentally review what was said and to who that would fit. Moreover, there is a Mexican character that is played so flat, that until it was explicitly stated I would never have conceived that he was Mexican, despite his name being "Diablo."This was a very good start in the effort. Perhaps his other books in the series are more developed. That said, if I had purchased this book, I would have asked for my money back.

Good story, but could stand to be longer.

Any additional comments?
I received this book for free from Audiobook Blast in exchange for an honest review of it, and while I don't know the context of this prequel from the latter books, I'd like to think it helped me to have fresh eyes for it. This book addressed the issues that would arise from robots being integrated into society, specifically from the perspective of the police. I thought there was a missed opportunity by avoiding considering the tension of some of the abuse of power that occurs in the office policemen hold, and putting that into contrast with robots' residing within set parameters. Perhaps this is addressed more in one of the later books. There were some deep undertones regarding human nature in this book, and I found it very thought-provoking for this reason. I valued the author's development of characters in the short time that he had. That said, I felt the book was too short. I thought it was a good story; however, I would weigh value of a good story and it's length to it's price.
