Historia
An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him. Travis Boyette is such a man. In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high-school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.

I will told the story about a tragic subject
Revisado: 03-31-25
Such a good book! It addresses a problem of our times. It does it in a compelling story and well developed character characters. The narration was excellent and exactly the right voice for this story.

Historia
Dr. Peterson guides us through the ancient, foundational stories of the Western world. In riveting detail, he analyzes the Biblical accounts of rebellion, sacrifice, suffering, and triumph that stabilize, inspire, and unite us culturally and psychologically. Adam and Eve and the eternal fall of mankind; the resentful and ultimately murderous war of Cain and Abel; the cataclysmic flood of Noah; the spectacular collapse of the Tower of Babel; Abraham’s terrible adventure; and the epic of Moses and the Israelites.

Insightful, Transformative Book
Revisado: 02-18-25
As a recovering Christian fundamentalist who grew up in a toxic religious environment. I can be hard to please. I’m skeptical after having been lied to as a child about what true faith, and more generally what truth is. The message here of authentic upward periodic growth is something that resonates deeply with who I am… A Christian psychologist. But I’m an open minded question, not satisfied with simple answers, and insistence that the Bible is literal.. I appreciated Peterson’s open mindedness to include truth from many sources which I have believed my whole career.
The other theme in the book of wrestling with God is dear to my heart as well. Even as a child, I was the skeptic, questioning how we went about things because it was patently obvious it wasn’t authentic. Two think directly that wrestling with God is not only acceptable, but the ideal is refreshing. I think he’s right that we wrestle with God if we are honest about the difficult things, we have to deal with in life, most notably suffering.
On the downside, sometimes Petersen‘s discussion seemed to get lost in too much detail. In some cases, I thought that it could’ve been said more simply and more clearly. Also, I’m not sure if Canadian pronunciation of certain words is different than what I’m used to as an American, but it stood out .
All in all and outstandingread. Well worth the time. Thought provoking and growth producing.

Great discussion of the problem of suffering
Revisado: 01-08-25
I like the idea of God, allowing problems in our lives, giving us the opportunity to fight, both wrestling with him/her as well as fighting for ourselves to prove to ourselves that we are capable of moving on after hardship. Interesting way to address the question.

Great Material, wrong narrator
Revisado: 09-26-24
This work full of profound insights and wisdom was almost obscured by the narration that was melodramatic, artificial, and breathy, It was very difficult for me to listen to. I very much like the authors material. It’s worth re-recording it by someone who reads it straight.

Historia
Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement.

Incisive Thinking
Revisado: 08-29-24
It’s so great to hear another voice questioning the lemming like direction of the evangelical church and be a voice of reason. I especially appreciate that he bases the bulk of his argument on the scripture and calls Christians to embrace what we say we believe, instead of going with the unexamined beliefs and implicit assumptions of the current preoccupation with the political environment. His writing reminds me of the fable about the Emperor‘s new clothes, where the innocent person who hasn’t learned to pretend, actually tells the truth. A refreshing read.

Historia
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

Not as good
Revisado: 04-06-24
I’ve been a long time fan of Clive Cussler‘s work. This one wasn’t up to the usual standard. The plot line seem to drive a little for me. Probably the most noticeable flaw was the narration. Like pronouncing. Qattar as “Cottar” and other mispronunciations. Voice impressions were off as well for the content of the story.
