Historia
The Civil War brought to a climax the country's bitter division. But the beginnings of slavery's denouement can be traced to a courageous band of ordinary Americans, black and white, slave and free, who joined forces to create what would come to be known as the Underground Railroad, a movement that occupies as romantic a place in the nation's imagination as the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Uncomfortably many parallels with today
Revisado: 04-03-21
It was great to learn about the history of abolition in much greater, and personal, detail. So many of the ways people defended keeping slaves parallels how people today are trying to hang on to our racist institutions. There is a lot to learn from self reflective reading of these stories.

Historia
When Ball Four was published in 1970, it created a firestorm. Bouton was called a Judas, a Benedict Arnold and a “social leper” for having violated the “sanctity of the clubhouse.” Baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn tried to force Bouton to sign a statement saying the book wasn’t true. Ballplayers, most of whom hadn’t read it, denounced the book. It was even banned by a few libraries. Almost everyone else, however, loved Ball Four.

It's worth making it to balls 5 and beyond. It's a fulfilling experience listening to the author share his stories and emotions in his own voice.

Historia
Beelzebub, the prince of demons, is bored. It's his destiny to one day rule the dark underworld known as the Red Realm, but it's sooo boring down there. All he wants to do is lay around all day in the lava pits (ahhh), boss everyone around (rude!), and maybe play a cruel prank (or two). But Beelzebub's father has had it with his son's nasty attitude. No one backtalks the Red King. NO ONE. A disgraced Beelzebub is banished by his father and cursed to spend his days in the worst place either of them can imagine. EARTH.

We can't wait for a sequel. I'm asked frequently to check and see if one has been published, yet.

Historia
Prue McKeel’s life is ordinary. At least until her brother is abducted by a murder of crows and taken to the Impassable Wilderness, a dense, tangled forest on the edge of Portland. No one’s ever gone in – or at least returned to tell of it. So begins an adventure that will take Prue and her friend, Curtis, deep into the Impassable Wilderness. There they uncover a secret world in the midst of violent upheaval - a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions.

Good young adult fantasy. I'd recommend it to my 11yo. Not in my top 100, but I enjoyed it.
The narration switched perspective with no discernable pauses. I found it annoying. Otherwise, the reading was very professional and engaging.

Historia
Bowser the dog is doing great. He's been adopted by Birdie, the greatest girl in the world, and he gets lots of love, lots of walks, and sometimes even bacon! But why is Birdie looking so worried? Who broke into their house? Why is the new girl in town digging into the old mystery of what really happened to Birdie's dad, a policeman killed in the line of duty? Bowser better keep his ears perked and his paws at the ready. A murder case that went cold long ago is fixing to get way too hot.

Good Epic Fantasy, too much 21st century
Revisado: 05-26-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this to fans of epic fantasy. It engages and draws you through for hours and hours.
Have you listened to any of Michael Kramer and Kate Reading ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I'm not sure if I've listened to others. This reading is easy to follow, well paced, and consistent in quality throughout. I would listen to more read by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading.
Any additional comments?
As a Mormon who has been engaged with the online discussions and explorations of Mormonism in the early 21st century, this book contains many anachronisms that are clearly inspired by discussions of historical accuracy of the Book of Mormon, the reality of revelation, the place of Feminism in religion, the moral strength of atheism, etc. Sanderson avoids preaching on any of the subjects, making them parts of different characters rather than a philosophy that drives the story. My friends who don't know Mormonism so well didn't notice, and weren't bothered by it, but for those familiar with 21st century internal religious tensions, these anachronisms may be distracting.
