Historia
For centuries, generations of Everlys have seen their brightest and best disappear, taken as punishment for a crime no one remembers, for a purpose no one understands. Their tormentor, a woman named Penelope, never ages, never grows sick–and never forgives a debt. Violet Everly was just a child when her mother Marianne vanished on a stormy night, determined to break the curse. And when Penelope cannot find her, she issues an ultimatum: Violet has ten years to find Marianne, or she will take her place.

Interesting story with beautiful language
Revisado: 06-17-24
Narrator was excellent to listen to. The pace fit the words. Story itself was unique and intriguing, but I found myself wanting more. The end, though wrapped up nicely , left me feeling unsatisfied.

I loved the beautiful raw honesty and power of the story. The central character was so believable, as were the cultural references.

Imaginative Ride
Revisado: 05-25-24
I raced through this book. It was deeply crafted, set in our world with a very creative twist. Characters were varied and real. Loved it! Good narrator as well. Would welcome a sequel if it is planned.😀

Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Well-written and narrated.
Revisado: 05-15-24
Reader sounded real as the narrator, like she was experiencing all those thoughts and emotions.
I did get a bit annoyed at the character’s tendency towards rationalization, but she was definitely true to that, even to the end.

"True belonging doesn't require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are." Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives - experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization.

Not to be Missed!
Revisado: 04-18-18
Where does Braving the Wilderness rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Braving the Wilderness is the best of the non-fiction books I have listened to so far. The book is full of usable ideas, solid truths, and enlightening stories. It is definitely one that I will listen to again and again--there is just so much to digest.
What other book might you compare Braving the Wilderness to and why?
Braving the Wilderness is in a class all it's own. There are some elements that reminded me of Presence, as they both are research based and use a narrative form to impart the information. They are both about becoming more truly yourself.
What about Brené Brown’s performance did you like?
I could listen to Brene Brown all day. She has a pleasant voice, one that engages you with the ideas, and does more than just read the book to you. She pauses in all the places one would if she were having a conversation with you. This makes it easy to engage with the ideas and feel present with the book. I would not want to have anyone else read one of her books. She has the voice of a trusted friend.
What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?
That we all make up stories about what's happening around us, and being aware of them and voicing them (when appropriate) empowers us and improves our relationships with others and ourselves.
