Mixed feelings
Revisado: 05-01-25
Pretty complex and complicated listen. I had a hard time following the three story lines keeping all the characters straight and what was going on in which timeline. Perhaps that was just me. It was interesting. The main complaint I have is the reader for Kate the doctor. I found her voice grating and jarring. And loud. I had to adjust the volume on my phone whenever she came on.

Ridiculous
Revisado: 04-02-25
Stupid characters, story lines and dialogue. Too much sexually explicit description. Glad I didn't waste a credit. Will never read this author again.

Historia
Dear Anna, What I have to tell you is difficult to write, but I know it will be far more difficult for you to hear, and I'm so sorry. The unfinished letter is the only clue Tara and Emerson have to the reason behind their close friend Noelle's suicide. Everything they knew about Noelle - her calling as a midwife, her passion for causes, her love for her friends and family - described a woman who embraced life. Yet there was so much they didn't know. With the discovery of the letter and its heartbreaking secret, Noelle's friends begin to uncover the truth about this complex woman who touched each of their lives.

Enjoyed at First
Revisado: 03-24-25
At the beginning I liked this book; but the further I got into it, I began to mostly be annoyed too much by a few things.
The narrator for Noelle was horrible. If she had been the narrator for the whole book or if she had been featured earlier than she was, I would have scratched listening to it at all. As it was, I increased the speed on her parts. Her voice was jarring, expressionless and robotic. I wish I could know which of the narrators she was so I can avoid her.
I was captivated by the story and the writing at first but it became too convoluted to keep up with. I like a book to have twists and turns but this was over the top. Much of it was fairly unrealistic as well. Unfortunate, because I think this author is one I could enjoy. I'll try another book as long as I don't have to use a credit. Maybe the next one will be better.

Not What I Expected
Revisado: 02-20-25
I got this book because it was recommended by someone on the online forum for Annie Hopper's DNRS brain retraining program which I am currently trying. I was disappointed that his work with that program had very little mention.
It was encouraging to hear of someone's struggles with the same health issue I have and who understands the debilitating effects of it. But in general I found it hard to connect with the rest of this author's life.
He is a good narrator.

The stories in Kerplunk! travel the byways and highways of the Pacific Northwest, bringing to life offbeat, down-home characters who hope their grandchildren can pick the lock on the gun safe because they've forgotten the combination, who know exactly why it costs $500 to make a fly lure that retails for $2, and who aren't afraid to confront the problems of bird-dog flatulence.

Horrible Narration
Revisado: 10-16-24
I love McManus books! The narrator of most of his other books (Norman Dietz) is excellent and really captures the characters and the spirit of his stories. However, the narrator of this one ruins it. I couldn't get very far into it before I had to stop!

Waste of a credit
Revisado: 09-19-24
I listen to a lot of books but don't often review them. However, I feel compelled to put my personal two cents worth in about this one.
With difficulty, I made it through the first book only because I wanted to see the ending. The reader's voice was hard to listen to. Very nasal. None of the characters were believable nor likable to me. There are many gratuitous and explicit sex scenes as well as very liberal use of juvenile, vulgar language all of which is not needed for a good story. I realize this is what some people want in their books; but there are still plenty of us that do not appreciate that. It would be nice if Audible or even the publishers of a book could put a disclaimer or warning on books like this. This was a waste of a credit. This was my first and last read from this author.
