Historia
Known for providing incisive progressive political analysis without being dogmatic, popular radio and podcast host David Pakman delves into the vicious cycle of reactionary political ideology. It's no secret how the right-wing has benefited and capitalized off disinformation and polarization of US politics. Critical thinking and media literacy are on a rapid decline, and our republic is unable to agree upon a shared set of facts. Pakman challenges the right-wing head-on and encourages listeners to understand how the status quo became the status quo.

Definitely worth a listen
Revisado: 04-11-25
This book is valuable for the history it gives about our country’s slide to the extreme right. It also gives very important info about how we fight back.
The weakest part of the book was the chapter, “Why Choose Leftism?” That topic is so vast and nuanced that its inclusion here feels superficial.
Regular listeners of David’s show don’t need to be convinced of the strength of leftist policy. And skeptical readers are not likely to be convinced by a collection of case studies. (at this very moment, Charlie Kirk is probably studying this chapter and finding counterexamples so he can DESTROY David Pakman with FACTS and LOGIC). I think it would have served the book better to weave these case studies into the rest of the narrative.
I wish the narration had a little more of the spirit - and maybe even snark - that you hear in David’s show. But David’s pronunciation and clarity is as reliable as ever. Bravo, man. This book is an achievement.

Well done, but..
Revisado: 02-16-25
I thought the adaptations were skillfully executed. sound design was on point and not cheesy.
But by the final story, I was ready to throw my device out the window each time a protagonist’s thoughts and feelings were treated with severe skepticism or dismissed by other characters. It really only worked in the context of one story.

A unique, empathetic portrayal of a strange time in America
Revisado: 01-27-25
If you’ve ever wondered how anybody in the 21st century could lament the result of America’s civil war, or proudly fly a confederate flag, or argue for the need to honor Confederate heroes… then this novel is a must-listen. If you are a person who falls into any of those categories, well, you should listen too.
The author has painted a well-researched and highly nuanced portrait of life after wartime. This story lays bare the human cost of an armed conflict, and reveals what has always been true… a war leaves no hands unbloodied. The narrator gives a great performance as well.
This story has truly helped me come to terms with what is happening at this moment in this country. It has helped me to find some kernel of compassion for all those folks out there who are so full of contempt. It has reminded me that systemic change is a brutal battle, and it has always been that way. This era is no different in that regard. The only thing that’s different about this political era is my own sensitivity and awareness of it.
If this resonates with you, listen to this book! Let it strengthen you.

Historia
Before then her bedroom was a dark, windowless cellar, her activities confined to cooking and cleaning. She'd grown used to being maltreated by the Songoli family - to being a slave. She's never been outside, doesn't know how to read or write, and cannot speak English. At least that's what the Songolis believe. But Muna is far cleverer - and her plans more terrifying - than the Songolis or anyone else can ever imagine....

A compact little thriller that keeps a nice steady pace. I like that it ended where it did. Good performance too.

Carolyn's not so different from the other human beings around her. After all, she was a normal American herself once. That was a long time ago, of course - before the time she calls "adoption day", when she and a dozen other children found themselves being raised by a man they learned to call Father.

Revisado: 01-10-25
I just downloaded this because it was in the audible plus catalog. Didn’t know a thing about it.
it wasn’t long before I was totally mesmerized and looking for any opportunity to keep listening.
I wish there were many more adventures to read starring Carolyn and all the rest, but I’m grateful that Mr. Hawkins has given us this peek into his creative universe. I hope someday he will publish more fiction.
The performance was also OUTSTANDING. The characters really came alive. I’m not sure I would have enjoyed it quite as much if I’d been reading it on the silent page.

Ida Pederson was an executive at ‘Nyberg Shoreline’ when she was sent to the small Northern Irish village of Port Kriel to diffuse tensions between the company and the local community. When an unexploded bomb was identified on the seabed near Nyberg’s windfarm, Ida sent a local crew of eight men to investigate. That night, only two men returned home, barely alive and unable to speak of what had happened out at sea.

Immersive but bland
Revisado: 12-07-24
The audio effects were really well done. And the performances were good. The story was meh for me though. The protagonist wasn’t likable and the story was populated with two-dimensional characters. I didn’t finish it.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Cherish the story, forgive the narrator
Revisado: 10-20-23
I totally loved this novel. I loved getting an insider's perspective not only into the world of competitive chess, but also into the meaning and intricacy of masterful chess playing. I sure didn't come into it with a love of chess - always thought it seemed dull. But this book shed some light on why it's continued to have such a presence in our world. Honestly thinking about putting a chess board on my Christmas wishlist tbh.
I felt that the narrator was weak. Her accents were not very distinct. Her biggest weakness was voicing male characters. They all sounded nearly identical, unless they had an accent - in which case, they sounded Russian. However, most conversations take place between Beth and just one other person, so the same-ness of the male voices didn't affect understanding.
Her female voices, on the other hand, were quite good and nuanced. and, while I agree with other reviewers that her recitation bordered on monotonous, I actually considered it to be a strength. It works well for the character of Beth, who keeps her emotions bottled up (or numbs herself when that fails), and strives to remain implacable on the surface, regardless of her internal highs and lows. The somewhat droning quality of the narration enhanced that part of Beth's character, for me. If you're on the fence about this book, give it a little longer. You may find yourself slipping into a sort of trance. Enjoy it!

Versace. The very name conjures up images of outrageous glamour and bold sexuality, opulence and daring. All of course true, but only half the story. Versace is also the legacy of a great creative genius from a poor, backward part of southern Italy who transformed the fashion world through his intuitive understanding of both women and how a changing culture influenced the way they wanted to dress. House of Versace shows how Gianni Versace, with his flamboyant sister Donatella at his side, combined his virtuosic talent and extraordinary ambition to help create celebrity culture.

I love true crime, and I initially downloaded this thinking it would be in that genre, and focusing on the investigation, trial, etc. for the tragic murder of a high-profile person.
This is not that - but i ended up riveted by this story. It’s a phenomenal, well-paced, compelling story about the founding of a brand that I knew only from magazine advertisements and had never given much thought to. I loved it!

Historia
To his neighbors, Wayne Nance, a furniture mover from Missoula, Montana, appeared to be an affable, considerate, and trustworthy guy. No one knew that Nance was the "Missoula Mauler," a psychopath responsible for a series of sadistic sex slayings that rocked the idyllic town between 1974 and 1986. Nance's only requirement for murder was accessibility - a preacher's wife, a teenage runaway, a female acquaintance, a married couple. Putting on a friendly façade, he could easily gain his victims' trust. Then, one September night, thirty-year-old Nance pushed his luck.

A little boring
Revisado: 06-25-23
This is definitely an interesting topic and it seemed well-researched. But I think the author fell short of weaving a compelling narrative. It read more like an assortment of somewhat connected anecdotes and recitations from casefiles/news reports, and didn’t necessarily do a good job of guiding the reader through the sometimes abrupt changes in direction. At other points, it was just boring.
The narrator was great, and did what he could with the material.
