It's a Wonderful Life
Revisado: 12-26-16
I rarely write reviews. Maybe it's just that time of season. I found myself rewinding chapters just to enjoy the story again.
I'm a huge fan of Chip and Joanna's HGTV show but more so of them as a couple. Thankfully and like their other endeavors they have pursued together they chose to narrate their little big story. No one else could have done this justice. Like the littlest package under the Christmas tree this offered inversely proportional rewards. If you need a mindset adjustment, need to re-focus, need a reality check, or need to dream again these little big steps they've taken in their journey is the mistletoe to your next steps. I've read and listened to several entrepreneurial stories on "how to" but somehow this story brings so many key aspects on how to succeed and how to get back up with faith and go forward in a sometimes fantastically unknown way.
Like watching the 1946 American classic "It's a Wonderful Life" I know I will listen to this story at least one time a year. Hear the bells?! The Magnolia team have gotten their earth wings on this one. Merry Christmas

Marc Royce works for the State Department on special assignments, most of them rather routine, until two CIA operatives go missing in Iraq--kidnapped by Taliban forces bent on generating chaos in the region. Two others also drop out of sight--a high-placed Iraqi civilian and an American woman providing humanitarian aid. Are the disappearances linked?

Pick this up. It will stay with you
Revisado: 11-19-12
Geniune surprise with this fast paced well written and thoughtful thriller. Bought the hard cover as a gift for a Colonel going through a tough procedure. He and my best friend's mother in law read the book and raved about it so I downloaded the audio. I actually rescheduled some of my two days just to listen to the whole book and will probably listen again. The narrator was exceptional and hopefully will be the same for anymore Marc Royce books. Give this a try you won't put it down and when your done. It hangs on to you.

The 2 books are a great story of life, love and loss. The other problem with the book is that it ended but if you listen you get an understanding of endings from the lucky dog's perspective. Well done. This will be a 2 book series that I will listen to again. Fantastic narration.

Revisado: 06-09-12
I have this for awhile but couldn't listen for the longest times since my 2 step-sister labs passed away. And now, I'm so glad I did listen. In fact, this will be one of the few books that I will re-listen to again. The narrator couldn't be better and did such a great job with the tone and pace of the book. This story is so heartfelt and for anyone who loves animals especially dogs this is a sure read/listen. I could visualize the entire story and was sorry to see it end. In an interesting way, this book is a lesson for any human purpose. Start with love and listening with attention.

A joyful listen and should be a must read in high school. It seems so natural to use the Pooh characters to explain Taoist tenets. Pooh is the "effortless will do" character and unburdened by life especially it's surprises. In contrast, Owl and Rabbit with all their seemingly wise expertise just over-complicate matters while Eeyore's poor life view just inables him to live a joyful life, and of course, there is Piglet with heart and soul. I will listen to again and again. Strive to Live in Harmony

Historia
Written with bracing wit and intelligence, Rachel Maddow's Drift argues that we've drifted away from America's original ideals and become a nation weirdly at peace with perpetual war, with all the financial and human costs that entails. To understand how we've arrived at such a dangerous place, Maddow takes us from the Vietnam War to today's war in Afghanistan.

Awesome Significance
Revisado: 04-19-12
With full disclosure (as Rachel Maddow would say on her MSNBC show) I'm a total fan of Rachel Maddow. I even bought the book and hope it's a first of many to come.
So I already knew I would like this book because it was written and read by ours truely - Rachel. Not all authors can pull off reading their book no matter how well written. I see no other person who could provide the inflections and tone. Well Done! Her logic, her research, her wit, her lovable sassy humor and the way she always lays out her cases is priceless. Her sequence of factual events and outcomes is a must read.
Though I did not need to be convinced we are at DRIFT even the most cynical totally right ultra conservative non-fan would be hard pressed to catch this wave. And at the end we have a bonus with a well thought out "to do list" of what she offers for us to get back home. As she does on her show, she lays out hard core sometimes painful truth and even verifies that understanding with her guest as if hoping some of what she understands just can't be true. But it is. Her solutions are well thought but only if we - as a nation - and with our leaders and representatives - come together with some realities of our past and current day choices and make healing ones forward.
She is a A Pocket of Sunshine in the breaking thunder!

23 Things They Don't Tell You about Capitalism

Historia
If you've wondered how we did not see the economic collapse coming, Ha-Joon Chang knows the answer: We didn't ask what they didn't tell us about capitalism. This is a lighthearted book with a serious purpose: to question the assumptions behind the dogma and sheer hype that the dominant school of neoliberal economists-the apostles of the freemarket-have spun since the Age of Reagan.

Accessible & Worthy
Revisado: 01-23-12
Appreciated the easy not overtly technical way Ha-Joon Chang laid out points on how USA have interpreted capitalism through domino choices. I walked away thinking Capitalism equals Politics whether that nature of leadership is in government or business with each describing and acquiring their own piece of the pie.
Each thing was well explained and seemed uncomfortably factual. The first thing "there is no such thing as a free market" is like "fat-free" there is no such thing as free. Thing 4 "the washing machine has changed the world more than the Internet" helped me understand the efficiency and liberation of what inventiveness has and has not done for our political system. And especially right now, I totally agreed with thing 13 "making rich people richer doesn't make the rest of us richer" - there is no such thing has trickle down in a broad and lasting sense. Hence the 99% vs 1% protests. Thing 15 " People in poor countries are more entrepeneurial than people in rich countries" is just like a kid (adult or young) clamoring to be bored while having way too many toys in the box with the lack of motivation to master anyone of them. The gulp and contrary thought I had was on thing 22 with financial markets need to become less, not more, efficient".
Chang's views seem arrestingly accurate and yet the reforms seem extremely far reaching with today's leadership. This easy to listen to book is for the "common day" person who is actually trying to understand how the USA is quivering and crumbling each day for a extremely high percentage of people.

In Let's Take the Long Way Home, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gail Caldwell offers a powerful and moving memoir about her coming-of-age in mid-life and her extraordinary friendship with Caroline Knapp, the author of Drinking: A Love Story. A Welcomed Surprise
Revisado: 11-30-10
A very easy listen. A heartful very well written story that I could relate to especially from a dear friend's recent news and our own bond. I actually really liked the narrator as her character (voice) seemed to be almost as matter of factly, earnest and strong as the women. The parts about each person's addiction and how they went through that journey was really well interlaced into the entire story. Well done.
