Enjoyed it so much more the second time around.
Revisado: 06-05-24
After listening the first time, I listened to Jiles’s book News of the World. After it, in a recorded interview, Paulette Giles recommends a book called the captured. It is about true stories of white children captured by Indians. Some of whom killed themselves by various means after being returned to their white families. I read this, News of the World (again, cuz I love it) and afterward gave the Color of lightning another try. Very glad I did!

Fantastic narration, hilarious book
Revisado: 07-13-22
The most amazing aspect of Black Marble is the narration I listen to a lot of books on audible. But I have never heard a better expression of many different characters, male and female, various ages and accents. They come to life and are so easily recognized when each reappears. And what story! Police procedurals abound in book and film, but you will never experience one like this. There is a ton of humor and pathos. I will now check out another Wambaugh novel! The film is great too

My Favorite Book?
Revisado: 01-09-22
Not sure, but it is my FOURTH time listening. So uplifting and entertaining. So many laughs and life lessons. His “happy gene” attitude is just the ticket after 2 years of covid, as well as my parents passing. I now have a great list of comedy classics to find on the internet!

A thought about the narration
Revisado: 06-07-21
In response to the large number of criticisms of the narrators, especially Ms. Lee: I’m a 68-year-old woman andI listen to a lot of audiobooks. I thought the choice of narrators was very good. It is fitting to have a woman narrate the first Section because the main subjects are the women in Molly’s family. Miss Lee’s speech is well enunciated and expressive, in my view. I wonder how many of the reviews critical of her were written by men. They seemed in general to be more pleased with Will Patton’s style, which is gruff and deep voiced. More”manly”?
The story is tragic, moving and written so that it is hard to stop listening. I highly recommend as American history and a true crime mystery.

Historia
On August 11, 2008, 18-year-old Marie reported that a masked man broke into her apartment near Seattle and raped her. Within days, the police swiftly pivoted and began investigating Marie. Confronted with inconsistencies in her story and the doubts of others, Marie broke down and said her story was a lie - a bid for attention. More than two years later, Colorado detectives pursued a serial rapist who photographed his victims, threatening to release the images online, and whose calculated steps to erase all physical evidence suggested he might be a soldier or a cop.

A victim of rape speaking
Revisado: 04-20-21
I and both my daughters are victims of rape. I first watched the movie. I wanted to know more of the story. This book did not disappoint. The authors leave no aspect of the story unexamined and there is so much more as usual, than the movie has time to explore. I strongly recommend this book to any survivor or person who knows a survivor and wishes to understand their experience. As a survivor myself, I feel at peace more than I have in 40 years since the event. I hope my daughters, one of whom was also disbelieved, will Read it too.

Just Teach Me
Revisado: 02-26-21
Meaning, I learned so much from this book: tools I can use in every day life to have a better relationship with my family and help them to have a better life. For instance, I now understand why my kids get defensive and angry when I simply asked them why they made the choices that they made. I now ask “ what would you like me to know, and how can I help” when they are in trouble, and also when I just want more information. I approach strangers if I think they might need some help, especially if they are disabled, because I can do so more respectfully.
I loved that the author narrated the book herself because she has such an emotional yet thoughtful and literate manner of speech.
Unlike some other reviewer‘s I did not expect or even want this to be a detailed story of the Nassar case. I like the examples of cases sprinkled through the book, but I wanted to know what makes this woman who she is today. Some of this is aided by her grandparents, and a mentors, but she has remarkable drive to achieve her dreams. And she tells how she tries to give this to others, especially the less fortunate. What a unique and inspiring story!

Historia
People die everyday. While most people in America die in a hospital, many families choose hospice for end of life care. Death, as experienced by hospice nurses, can be beautiful, peaceful, humorous, touching, tragic, disturbing, and even otherworldly. Hospice nurses act as midwives to dying people every day. Death transforms not just the patient and family, but the hospice nurse as well. The stories in this book are presented with the hope that their transformation extends to you, too. Heidi Telpner, R.N.

What an enlightening read.
Revisado: 04-02-20
My 90 year old parents were recently cared for by hospice, and it was a good experience. But it’s my only experience. Thanks to Heidi, I am much better informed. And very entertained to boot. I like her lively narrative style, and value her advice about using hospice and technical end of life decisions that we all might face ( eg whether to tube feed a dying person). While others have complained about the narrator’s stop and start speech, I found it almost charming: like talking with a friend who pauses mid sentence to take a quick breath every so often. Not a biggie to me, just a quirk I can easily overlook. I am writing my first review ever for this book, because hospice care is a difficult subject to choose when looking for the next read. This group of personal stories is worth every minute spent. I just re-listened, and it won’t be the last time!
