Historia
In So Much Longing in So Little Space, Karl Ove Knausgaard sets out to understand the enduring and awesome power of Edvard Munch's work by training his gaze on the landscapes that inspired Munch and speaking firsthand with other contemporary artists, including Anselm Kiefer, for whom Munch's legacy looms large. Bringing together art history, biography, and memoir, Knausgaard tells a passionate, freewheeling, and pensive story about not just one of history's most significant painters, but the very meaning of choosing the artist's life, as he himself has done.

moral certainty is very tedious
Revisado: 08-31-23
While this book is sprinkled with amusing parts that are weighted toward the beginning of the book, the weird certainty that is over the entire book in combination with his own admission of his fickle approach to his diet changes makes for a trying listen after the first hour. As always, this narrator is great and I still really like Dick Gregory and will always be vegan.

so tedious
Revisado: 01-04-22
I want to defend Blake butler because I like some of his earlier works but this was a slog and felt more and more like a tedious intellectual exercise with painful stereotypes in supporting parts. sorry I get to bash this but I made it through because I felt I owed it that for some reason.

Historia
After receiving a prestigious writing fellowship in Germany, the narrator of Red Pill arrives in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee and struggles to accomplish anything at all. Instead of working on the book he has proposed to write, he takes long walks and binge-watches Blue Lives - a violent cop show that becomes weirdly compelling in its bleak, Darwinian view of life - and soon begins to wonder if his writing has any value at all.

Historia
This is a story about young men who learned to play baseball during the 1930s and 1940s, and then went on to play for one of the most exciting major-league ball clubs ever fielded, the team that broke the color barrier with Jackie Robinson. It is a story by and about a sportswriter who grew up near Ebbets Field, and who had the good fortune in the 1950s to cover the Dodgers for the Herald Tribune. This is the story about what happened to the team when their glory days were behind them.

Historia
“The first of my father’s illusions was that bears could survive the life lived by human beings, and the second was that human beings could survive a life led in hotels.” So says John Berry, son of a hapless dreamer, brother to a cadre of eccentric siblings, and chronicler of the lives lived, the loves experienced, the deaths met, and the strange times encountered by the family Berry. Hoteliers, pet-bear owners, friends of Freud (the animal trainer and vaudevillian, that is), and playthings of mad fate, they “dream on” in a funny, sad, outrageous, and moving novel.

this book was delayed at least twice before !
Revisado: 12-23-20
There was clearly a lot of care that went into this and it shows. I am very appreciative. it is not among my top three favorite but it still has all those beats you love and all the clear influences from Hawthorne and grass. sometimes the tone shuffles between comedy and tragedy in a way that feels clunky to today's ears. I am curious what Irving thinks of this book today. very fun.

I got this book in 2002 or 2003 and listening to it again in audio form was an absolute blast. What a great listen and adventure. The performers are great and do a great job differentiating without doing poor imitations.

Historia
Nineteen-year-old Greg Sestero met Tommy Wiseau at an acting school in San Francisco. Wiseau's scenes were rivetingly wrong, yet Sestero, hypnotized by such uninhibited acting, thought, "I have to do a scene with this guy." That impulse changed both of their lives. The Disaster Artist is Greg Sestero's laugh-out-loud funny account of how Tommy Wiseau defied every law of artistry, business, and friendship to make "the Citizen Kane of bad movies" ( Entertainment Weekly), which is now an international phenomenon.

i have listened to hundreds of audiobooks. this book is 1 in 100. Greg Sestero's performance is incredible and his voice in the text is so strong. Combined with Bissell's unique strength in narrative, this audiobook is a force. Do not even think of trying to read this when you get so much more from the reading of the audiobook.

This is really bad
Revisado: 03-31-12
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
People who enjoy the Sedaritives and other unfunny parts of the Believer
What could the authors have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Used different material, honestly. They seem to sell themselves short with this advice tactic which bottoms out before it starts for me.
How could the performance have been better?
They do not sound invested or convinced that what they are saying is funny. It may be because it is not.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
A mostly solid line up of readers and writers.
