Historia
In the aftermath of a flood that washes away much of a small Tennessee town, evangelical preacher Asher Sharp offers shelter to two gay men. In doing so, he starts to see his life anew - and risks losing everything: his wife, locked into her religious prejudices; his congregation, which shuns Asher after he delivers a passionate sermon in defense of tolerance; and his young son, Justin, caught in the middle of what turns into a bitter custody battle. With no way out but ahead, Asher takes Justin and flees to Key West, where he hopes to find his brother, Luke, whom he'd turned against years ago after Luke came out.

Heartwarming and gut-wrenching father-son tale
Revisado: 12-18-23
Silas House continues to deliver outstanding stories that in a small way, help correct some of society’s misunderstandings and prejudices. When told through the lens of a father-son tale, it can be extremely powerful. This is a fantastic book.

Historia
As fires devastate most of the United States, Lark and his family secure a place on a refugee boat headed to Ireland, the last country not yet overrun by extremists and rumored to be accepting American refugees. But Lark is the only one to survive the trip, and once ashore, he doesn’t find the safe haven he’d hoped for. As he runs for his life, Lark finds an abandoned dog who becomes his closest companion, and then a woman in search of her lost son. Together they form a makeshift family and attempt to reach Glendalough, a place they believe will offer protection.

My first dystopian novel and I loved it
Revisado: 08-05-23
Silas House is a fellow Kentuckian so I have this a listen. I’m not much for dystopian tales of future woes but I genuinely loved this story. They dystopia doesn’t overshadow real human relationships and emotions. It was quite masterful.

Historia
Why are you struggling to grow your business when everyone else seems to be crushing their goals? If you needed to triple revenue within the next three years, would you know exactly how to do it? Doubling the size of your business, tripling it, even growing 10 times larger isn't about magic. It's not about privileges, luck, or working harder. There's a template that the world's fastest-growing companies follow to achieve and sustain much, much faster growth.

I'm only reviewing this because of the performance
Revisado: 10-25-22
This is a great book, but avoid the audio version. The performance/reader is abysmal. I literally fell asleep listening within 1-2 minutes each time ... once while driving! The narrator has zero inflection, computer-like awkward pauses and lack of appropriate pauses, and I could swear at times didn't sound human at all. I hesitated posting this because it sounds so hateful and personal ... it's not, I promise. I just couldn't let it go that this narration was so bad it was distracting from the story and content, which is outstanding.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

The podcast-like format transforms audio book making
Revisado: 09-17-19
I absolutely loved Talking With Strangers. Not only are the stories and research expertly reported and gripping in their Gladwellian style, but the mixed media audio-production-style completely transforms the audio book. Hearing the audio from traffic stops, actual subjects quoted saying those words rather than the author repeating them and the radio journalism style just makes it that much more excellent. I’ve not been an audio book fan until now. Unfortunately for me, all others will now be judged by this one’s high bar.
