Not worth the time

Its a decent drama with satisfying character development, but at the end of 35+hrs I just come away with.. a decent drama, remind me of Netflix period dramas I've been watching - Bridgertons, Crown. Narrator was great.

Think Winnie the Pooh

Its a boy and his animal friends. There are lots of wise and pithy one liners. And not much else. Lots of quiet space between sentences. The one joke is how much the mole likes cake. (As Pooh likes honey)

You can't really Not read it....

Yes, I still recommend reading it, for completeness, and for the odd ending which I actually skipped the first time through, because I thought the book was pretty much over, (and which Peter Jackson also skipped.) However, I didn't really like this one, with all the Gondor stuff. I like the Fellowship.

collection of first person recollections

It actually took me a confused hour or so to realize the entire book is a collection of interviews, presented in snippets from 10 seconds to half an hour or so. Very intersting to hear a cross section of reminiscence about Soviet and post breakup Soviet Union. It is very long, so you gotta dig in with some patience.

Time to think about end of life

(I read Gawande's Better first, about the medical industry, sort of Topics in the Medical Industry, which I also really liked.)
This book addresses: whats the best way to live out your end of life: hospice? Live in care? Family? Nursing home? DNR? It changed my assumptions.

Relationships/Running/Vegan/Outdoors

I really liked Jenny writing alternate chapters, and also narrating her own writing. I am not a runner or a vegan, (though I did first meet Scott in Born to Run which I really liked also.) Here, it was the personal component that kept me interested - relationships with Jenny & other friends & runners, dealing with haters, pushing through, being polite, dealing with well-meaners.

Read biographies of great people..

This guy is smart, driven, hardworking, and self-confident in the extreme. Like almost the somethings-wrong-with-him extreme. I appreciate reading about talent & hard work like this & find it inspirational. I'm now cheering for SpaceX & Tesla.

Read the Sparknotes not the book

Yes there are sort of pop culture references you should know, that originated in this book, like Big Brother, and the memory-hole. And yes, we should always guard against the slippery slope to total government power - some people say we are now slipping more than previously. But that doesn't make it worth reading the book! It is long and not enjoyable!

Novel where the characters happen to be spies

..but a "spy novel" I think implies a little more suspense and nail biting than this book holds. The 2 main female characters I found less than believable in their actions & dialog. The love story a little too pat.

Not a dinosaur story!

The title the cover art and the author's resume sort of made me think this book would have to do with T-Rex. Not so: this is a straight western. I like me a good western, this one was just OK. (and BTW the teeth involved are brontosaurus teeth, not the T Rex on the cover. I feel misled.)
