Historia
For the past few hundred years, most of what we’ve been taught about the native cultures of North America came from reports authored by the conquerors and colonizers who destroyed them. Now - with the technological advances of modern archaeology and a new perspective on world history - we are finally able to piece together their compelling true stories. In Ancient Civilizations of North America, Professor Edwin Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center, will open your eyes to a fascinating world you never knew existed - even though you’ve been living right next to it, or even on top of it.

Let's Rewrite American History Books!
Revisado: 07-16-20
Away with all of that nonsense that Europeans "discovered" America! Just a few lectures into this series, and you come away with a profound, necessary understanding that what young Americans learn in their history classes is so...wrong. Dr. Barnhart easily explains that there were MILLIONS of people living in America by the time our histories were beginning to be written - it's a tragedy that most of us simply don't know the true narrative of our country.
I look forward to visiting many of the remaining sites that the professor describes in these stories. This series is a fascinating lesson in education, truth, and the real story of America!

Stuck with it; Couldn't Stop Listening!
Revisado: 05-05-20
A great example of how narration can elevate a story! This is an expertly-researched book that, frankly, I would have skimmed over in the library or bookstore. I'm so glad I chose to give it a shot in audio-version; the story is so fascinating and so well-performed that it becomes a treat to listen to. If you're a fan of history, please don't pass this one up!

Fascinating, but Beware if...
Revisado: 03-13-20
This is truly a fascinating story, and the narrator (who plays the main character in Mindhunter) does an excellent job. Beware, however. This book contains graphic descriptions of violence against children; for those of us weirdos who love true crime and serial killer material, the first half of this book was hard to stomach even for me. Still, take a chance on it. Just keep your finger on the forward button in case of emergencies.

Historia
What won't we try in our quest for perfect health, beauty, and the fountain of youth? Well, just imagine a time when doctors prescribed morphine for crying infants. When liquefied gold was touted as immortality in a glass. And when strychnine - yes, that strychnine, the one used in rat poison - was dosed like Viagra. Looking back with fascination, horror, and not a little dash of dark, knowing humor, Quackery recounts the lively, at times unbelievable, history of medical misfires and malpractices.

Comprehensive is an understatement
Revisado: 11-08-18
I didn't get into this book or the performance until I was well in, but I ended up settling in comfortably after a while. This book is CHOCK FULL of interesting facts and kooky treatments; it would be difficult not to get hooked once you get accustomed to the generous sprinkling of gratuitous corny jokes (the narrator does a good job of handling them by the way). It's a good addition to your library if you're into medical history.

Historia
In the pantheon of serial killers, Belle Gunness stands alone. She was the rarest of female psychopaths, a woman who engaged in wholesale slaughter, partly out of greed but mostly for the sheer joy of it. Between 1902 and 1908, she lured a succession of unsuspecting victims to her Indiana “murder farm". Some were hired hands. Others were well-to-do bachelors. All of them vanished without a trace.

Not enough information to be interesting
Revisado: 10-04-18
I want so much to be drawn in by stories of these earlier crime cases, but I'm discovering the same thing about Belle Gunness that I discovered about HH Holmes: there just isn't enough surviving information to make their stories all that interesting. The narrator does a good job; he's got a voice that complements the subject's time frame well. I just wasn't enthralled. It would be a great read if you're just getting into true crime.

Historia
The story of poison is the story of power. For centuries, royal families have feared the gut-roiling, vomit-inducing agony of a little something added to their food or wine by an enemy. To avoid poison, they depended on tasters, unicorn horns, and antidotes tested on condemned prisoners. Servants licked the royal family's spoons, tried on their underpants, and tested their chamber pots. Ironically, royals terrified of poison were unknowingly poisoning themselves daily with their cosmetics, medications, and filthy living conditions.

Relieved and surprised
Revisado: 09-28-18
Boy, I wasn't sure if I could make it past Part One; you've got to have a very strong stomach to be able to get through those detailed descriptions of some of the unmentionable habits of Renaissance royalty...but as the book progressed, I was hooked. Once the summaries are completed, you move on to case-by-case summaries of some of the more well-documented accounts of people who were assumed to be killed by suspicious means, including modern diagnoses.
It is a well-written, thoroughly-researched, and hugely entertaining book. The cherry on top is the narration; I was so impressed by Susie Berneis's performance that I'm going to look up her other works.
I highly recommend this book for those who can handle talk about worms, fistulas, and excrement. If that's not the subject matter for you, you may still be able to handle it; just skip past Part One. Seriously.

Historia
In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of 19th-century surgery on the eve of profound transformation. She conjures up early operating theaters - no place for the squeamish - and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.

Loved it enough to get through the yuck!
Revisado: 05-01-18
I'm always in search of interesting nonfiction, and this book does not disappoint! I am somewhat surprised that I was able to make it through the grisly, gory context, but then again, that's a big part of this book's "charm".
The narrator does a great job, although I had a couple of laughs at his very Scottish attempts at a French accent. With that aside, his cadence and flow were a perfect match for this unique story.
Brace yourself, and give it a try! You may get totally grossed-out, but if you make it through to the end, you'll discover that you've stumbled upon an incredibly interesting period in medical history, heightened by the life of a man who changed the face of surgery forever.

Historia
Imagine undergoing an operation without anesthesia performed by a surgeon who refuses to sterilize his tools - or even wash his hands. This was the world of medicine when Thomas Dent Mütter began his trailblazing career as a plastic surgeon in Philadelphia during the middle of the 19th century. Although he died at just 48, Mütter was an audacious medical innovator who pioneered the use of ether as anesthesia, the sterilization of surgical tools, and a compassion-based vision for helping the severely deformed, which clashed spectacularly with the sentiments of his time.

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book.
