Historia
The Russian Revolution may be the most misunderstood and misrepresented event in modern history, its history told in a mix of legends and anecdotes. In A People's History of the Russian Revolution, Neil Faulkner sets out to debunk the myths and pry fact from fiction, putting at the heart of the story the Russian people who are the true heroes of this tumultuous tale.

Trotskyist perspective
Revisado: 09-25-21
If I had known that the author was a Trotskyist, I wouldn't have bought the book. I don't mind communists, I'm just not fond of Trotskyists. How can I get a refund?

Historia
The British win the American Revolutionary War, and a desperate Washington and the American founders must make a last stand in an enclave called Liberty. In 1781, George Washington's attempt to trap the British under Cornwallis at Yorktown ends catastrophically when the French fleet is destroyed in the Battle of the Capes. The revolution collapses, and the British begin a bloody reign of terror. A group of rebels flees westward and sets up a colony near what is now Chicago. They call it Liberty.

Historia
In his 2005 book, The Long Emergency, James Howard Kunstler described the global predicaments that would pitch the USA into political and economic turmoil in the 21st century - the end of affordable oil, climate irregularities, and flagging economic growth, to name a few. Now, he returns with a book that takes an up-close-and-personal approach to how real people are living now - surviving The Long Emergency as it happens.

Wrong about America being broke
Revisado: 03-28-21
Mentions that we can't have National Healthcare because "we're broke" while not mentioning in the same paragraph that we seem to have unlimited funds for never ending wars and tax breaks for millionaires. I'm a student of "Modern Money" (MMT) so this was a bit much for me.
I do agree with the Author that we are using up everything on a finite world and this is going to bite us in our posteriors.

Historia
Stephanie Kelton's brilliant exploration of modern monetary theory (MMT) dramatically changes our understanding of how we can best deal with crucial issues ranging from poverty and inequality to creating jobs, expanding health care coverage, climate change, and building resilient infrastructure. Any ambitious proposal, however, inevitably runs into the buzz saw of how to find the money to pay for it, rooted in myths about deficits that are hobbling us as a country.

All citizens of Fiat currency issuing nations, free floating currencies, unpegged, etc should give this book a read or a listen. Should be required reading in all first year Economics classes and it behooves all of us to know how this works, to see the actual plumbing. I'll be using this book as a learning resource for years to come, just as a reference to revisit from time to time.

Historia
In 1892, a young man left his home in the coastal foothills of Lebanon in search of a better life. Coming to America with his newlywed wife, he found work as a traveling peddler, before settling on a small farm in central Nebraska. Years later, personal tragedy and an unexpected midnight visit from a saint changed the course of his life. Seeing the desperate need of his fellow orthodox Christians and heeding God’s call, he would spend the rest of his life traversing the Great Plains as a circuit-riding priest, known to his thousands of parishioners as Father Nicola Yanney.

Historia
On New Year's Day in 1870, 10-year-old Adolph Korn was kidnapped by an Apache raiding party. Traded to Comanches, he thrived in the rough nomadic existence, quickly becoming one of the tribe's fiercest warriors. Forcibly returned to his parents after three years, Korn never adjusted to life in white society. He spent his last years living in a cave, all but forgotten by his family. That is, until Scott Zesch stumbled upon his great-great-great-uncle's grave. Determined to understand how such a "good boy" could have become Indianized so completely, Zesch traveled across the West.

Historia
America, says Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Chris Hedges, is convulsed by an array of pathologies that have arisen out of profound hopelessness, a bitter despair and a civil society that has ceased to function. The opioid crisis, the retreat into gambling to cope with economic distress, the pornification of culture, the rise of magical thinking, the celebration of sadism, hate, and plagues of suicides are the physical manifestations of a society that is being ravaged by corporate pillage and a failed democracy. All these ills presage a frightening reconfiguration of the nation and the planet.

Brutal but worth it.
Revisado: 11-25-18
I struggled to get through the first 80% of the book because of the raw reality it describes. The ONLY criticism I have is that Brother Chris Hedges is not an economist. Neither am I but I do follow economists and the Petro Dollar isn't anything to sweat, just ask Dr. Stephanie Kelton (economist) or Professor L. Randall Wray or Professor Bill Mitchell or Warren Mosler, Patricia Pino and many others. Other than the Petro Dollar thing, the book was VERY informative and even a little inspirational. #LearnMMT

What does a middle-class democracy look like when it comes apart? When, after 40 years of economic triumph, America’s winners persuade themselves that they owe nothing to the rest of the country? Rendezvous with Oblivion is a collection of interlocking essays examining how inequality has manifested itself in our cities, in our jobs, in the way we travel - and of course in our politics, where in 2016, millions of anxious ordinary people rallied to the presidential campaign of a billionaire who meant them no good.
