Excellent narration but the story is an extremely depressing picture of alcoholism, corruption and mob violence. Only good thing other than the narration was that it was short.

While it was … odd … to hear Lula performing Vernon, it was somehow fitting. Interesting way to destroy the world and plenty of laughs along the way.

I enjoyed listening to the strong Scottish accent and deciphering the colloquialisms, but the effort involved detracted from the story. I was entranced enough by plot and characters to get the Kindle version so that I could finish it. The accent lent a lot to the authenticity, but it got in the way of the story.
The characters were amusing, if a bit extreme, and the plot was involved, with surprises around every curve.

Many reviewers have written about a couple of “jaw drop” moments in this story. Perhaps, having read the reviews is the reason I was not so surprised. Still … I cannot voice my dislike here without giving the plot away. The book is unusual and was not to my taste.

Amusing Snarkfest

Jill Gooder is one of the many “I didn’t know I was a witch or that magic was real!” Protagonists in the cozy-paranormal-mystery genre. There are almost 50 of this series published, which makes one wonder whether they are written by a group or a machine …
Jill has the maturity of a 14 year old girl … and allows herself to be under the thumb of her adoptive sister, her inherited office secretary, her one-eyed cat Winky and others in her orbit. She suffers badly from undiagnosed OCD - she loves custard crème cookies, for example, but won’t eat them if they have been stored in a tin with other varieties.
The world build magic is interesting - spells are learned by memorizing a series of images, each spell has limitations, e.g. size of target, length of time it is active, how soon it can be repeated. There are levels of witches and higher level witches can, of course, do stronger, more lasting spells.
What saves this book, for me, is Winky the cat. He is *not* a Good Cat. He has creative ways of dominating Jill and creative ways to punish her. He out snarks everybody else in the book. He is just … refreshing.

Great collection of bite-sized stories, perfect for when you don’t have hours to listen or the times you can listen are so far apart you lose the plot or for those whose memory has begun to betray them.

This genre-crushing novel is hilarious, featuring an unmatched cast of quirky characters and a thrill-a-minute plot taking place in exotic locations. Add to all this an excellent narrator and you have a five- star book.

NOT a book that gives an objective view of other cultures, but an amusing look at the mind of an adolescent male.
If you are considering this book because you like Bryson's other work, don't. It is as if written by a totally different person.

20 voices (counting the intro) in 13 minutes, bringing alive words both familiar and new. Fun game in the morning - try to remember the last entry you heard and guessing from there how long it took you to fall asleep. The material is entertaining without being stimulating - the perfect bedtime story.

Delightful first novel somewhat spoiled by the narrator, who read in an American accent except for the dialog, which was read in a very poor attempt at a British accent.
