Historia
For thousands of years, the prophet Moses was regarded as the sole author of the first five books of the Bible, known as the Pentateuch. According to tradition, Moses was divinely directed to write down foundational events in the history of the world: the creation of humans, the worldwide flood, the laws as they were handed down at Mt. Sinai, and the cycle of Israel’s enslavement and liberation from Egypt. However, these stories—and their frequent discrepancies—provoke questions.

Great documentary hypothesis exploration
Revisado: 01-16-25
If you are interested in the documentary hypothesis, this book is fantastic. The author lays out a compelling case for the documentary hypothesis and even postulates who a couple of the documentary authors might be. Even handed, scholarly, Well performed. I loved it.

Historia
Historians know virtually nothing about the two decades following the crucifixion of Jesus, when his followers regrouped and began to spread his message. During this time the man we know as the apostle Paul joined the movement and began to preach to the gentiles. Using the oldest Christian documents that we have - the letters of Paul - as well as other early Christian sources, historian and scholar James Tabor reconstructs the origins of Christianity.

Even handed treatment of Paul vs other early Christian teachings (including the Jerusalem Church)
Revisado: 04-14-24
This is a scholarly book that focuses on the secular, historical perspectives of what the early church might have looked like. Spoiler alert: Paul's teachings are likely very different than the teachings of Peter and James. I have read over a dozen books on the secular historians' thoughts on early church development. This is definitely one of my favorites.

Historia
The Old Testament - written in ancient Israel by many different authors over the course of a thousand years - has had more meaning to more people than any other book the world has known. In a series of 24 lively lectures, Professor Levine explores selected passages from the texts known as the Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible, and the Tanakh, revealing how fresh research and findings from scholars of archaeology, cross-cultural studies, and comparative religion can deepen your understanding.

This is a wonderful book if you are open-minded. It is beautifully narrated by a delightful speaker
Revisado: 02-13-24
The writer is a wonderful scholar. This is not the type of lecture that builds your faith. It is the type of lecture that teaches a very pragmatic and often unflattering view of ancient texts. The author does it in such a fashion that that anyone who is open-minded should enjoy it

Historia
Why don't Christians in the church today keep the biblical sabbath? Was the observance of the seventh-day sabbath done away with, canceled, changed, replaced, fulfilled, made obsolete, suppressed, hijacked, or simply forgotten? Even if you already know the answers, you'll want to listen to this book. From Sabbath to Sabbath approaches the question of the sabbath from a completely new messianic Jewish perspective.

Amazing job illuminating the Day of Rest
Revisado: 08-16-23
This is an amazing book. It does a great job of describing why the Sabbath may still be extraordinarily valid in the lives of modern people. It shows some things about how and why Christianity unnaturally abandoned Judaism. Read it!

Historia
The Jewish Gospel of John is not, by any standard, another book on Jesus of Nazareth written from a Jewish perspective. It is an invitation to the listener to put aside their traditional understanding of the Gospel of John and to replace it with another one more faithful to the original text perspective. The Jesus that will emerge will provoke you to rethink most of what you knew about this gospel.

Jewish context for Jesus
Revisado: 07-28-23
This book does a great job of helping the reader understand John's message by explaining early CE Jewish contextual issues.
The author uniquely proposes that The Book of John was written with Samaritan readers in mind. The author uses this perspective to justify removing the supposed anti-Semitic sentiment from the book. I had never thought of this perspective before, After reading this book, I prefer the author's perspective.
The narrator is fantastic. He has just enough accent to keep it interesting. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Life's trials and triumphs can seem accidental. One person may feel that life is a constant struggle in which pitfalls abound and someone seems out to get him. Another may feel that every day is a gift from God, with special blessings just for her. That's because forces are at work in our lives: the blessings of a loving God or the curses of our spiritual adversary.

This is a truly amazing book. If I had tho pick 5 books that every Christian should read, this would be one of them. It delves into the power of the tongue from a perspective that is extremely moving and effective. As we all know, the power of the tongue is of the utmost importance in our Christian walk. Read it! Memorize its scripture references. Read it again! Live it.

With seminaries teaching heresy, denominations accepting blasphemy, ministers preaching for currency, and true biblical Christians being accused of lunacy, there is no doubt that we are now in the great apostasy that the Apostle Paul spoke of! Find out why so many denominations today require tithes from their members and proclaim that if one is not tithing to the church, they are disobeying God.

Very interesting view on tithing- Approach is poor
Revisado: 01-31-20
There is lots of good Bible in this book. I believe the author is honestly trying to explain scripture accurately. Kudos to the author for that. His main point is that tithing is inadequately, inaccurately, and/or deceptively explained from many pulpits today... and he's probably right. I believe the author loves the Lord. Unfortunately, the author's negative experiences with his church have been overemphasized in this book. This makes the read a little fatiguing (especially the appendices).
I liked the scripture and scriptural explanation in this book. I am glad I read this book. I would, however, only recommend this book to people who meet Both of the criteria.
1. Readers that are interested in learning what every verse in the Bible says about tithing
2. Readers that are tolerant of a rough (approaching belligerent) style

Historia
The Bible is explicit: We live in a world of distinct opponents; our very lives are a battle. Yet too many Christians lose more battles than they win and endure their walk with God rather than enjoy it because they don't recognize the enemy when they see it. More importantly, they have no idea how to respond. While society tells us we can react simply, the truth is that a wish, a hope, and a prayer are not the best responses to attacks from those who stand between us and the Father.

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Title sounds pretty heinous. But the philosophies contained are surprisingly Biblical. No religious discussions are covered. Just good paradigms presented with colorful language.
