"Not for me" captures this
Revisado: 04-13-24
I wish I could review without giving it stars. I know many people enjoy this book and I liked the "Others" series by Anne Bishop so I gave this one a try.
I could not stand how angry and overbearing every male was. The 'main' character (female, Jaenelle) never felt like a person to me. She seemed like a coddled and powerful toy. The way the males in the story talked to each other made everything sexual innuendo. It just seemed like a bunch of badly behaved teen boys. Don't they have bigger things to worry about such as keeping Jaenelle alive so she can fight whatever the bad thing is?
The amount of casual sexual violence (sometimes with children involved) was not explicitly described but it was too much, too often. The book is very character driven and unfortunately all of these characters have suffered and are suffering terrible trauma.
It's been 300+ books since I've put one down without finishing, but I gave up on this one about 2/3 the way through. Perhaps it gets better, but I couldn't stick around to find out.

Great story
Revisado: 02-12-24
This story is hard to put down! Lots of mystery, interesting magic system, political intrigue.
The narrator’s tone matches the narrative well and she doesn’t have any annoying traits. It is easy to tell the voices apart. The fact that it sounds a bit bedtime-story-like would be irritating, except that a lot of the story is meant to be an older woman telling a small child things.
This book is part of a series and you will want to continue after this one. It sets up the world. It does end in a place with resolution, so you could stop at this one

Historia
A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can change their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement.

Great story
Revisado: 09-26-23
The world building was amazing and totally immersive.
It is not super action packed- but there is a plot and things do happen at a relatively moderate pace.
I don’t care much for the bits that are classic stories from the alien world (winter) but they aren’t very long.
My only issue with the narration was that you couldn’t tell which of the two POVs you were getting except by context. But that really does make it hard to figure out what’s happening at times.

Historia
The city of Bulikov once wielded the powers of the gods to conquer the world, enslaving and brutalizing millions - until its divine protectors were killed. Now Bulikov has become just another colonial outpost of the world's new geopolitical power, but the surreal landscape of the city itself - first shaped, now shattered, by the thousands of miracles its guardians once worked upon it - stands as a constant, haunting reminder of its former supremacy. Into this broken city steps Shara Thivani.

Great once you get into it!
Revisado: 03-27-22
I read this book twice. The first time I didn't like it. The second time I'm glad I tried again because I loved it. There's quite a bit of setup in this book and it's very much a fantasy novel with political intrigue. There's also a little too much fighting description for my taste, but I enjoyed the characters and the setting.

Historia
In To Shield the Queen, we were introduced to Ursula Blanchard, lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth I and one of the most entrancing mystery heroines to come along in many a season. Having once saved the Virgin Queen from political disaster, now young Ursula faces an even greater challenge. Some of her old acquaintances may be plotting to overthrow Elizabeth in favor of Mary, Queen of Scots, and the re-establishment of the Catholic faith.

Enjoyable Mystery
Revisado: 03-27-22
I enjoyed this second installment of the Ursula Blanchard mysteries, but not as much as the first one. The love story is tiresome and the evil characters are just too evil. This one had some really fun side characters though!

Historia
In 12th century London, Magdalene la Bâtarde is the madam of the Old Priory Guesthouse in Southwark. She is not in the least bit sorry to learn that Bertrild, the unpleasant wife of Master Mainard, is dead. Bertrild was insulting to most people. She made threats, using terrible revelations as a weapon against those who would not bow down to her demanding ways.

Good 12th Century Mystery
Revisado: 03-27-22
I like the historical setting of these books and the mysteries. The thing that keeps them from being 5 stars for me is that I get a little tired of the prostitutes thing and sometimes they get confusing with all of the "current events" (history) thrown in. It's hard to remember which characters are associated with which historical figures. I would also like a little more character development.

Historia
Amelia Peabody embarks on her first Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal for her thoughts, and, of course, a sturdy umbrella. On her way, she rescues Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been "ruined" and abandoned on the streets of Rome by her lover. With a typical disregard for convention, Amelia promptly hires her fellow countrywoman as a companion and takes her to Cairo, where strange visitations and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn.

Historia
Why exactly Charley Bordelon's late father left her eight hundred sprawling acres of sugarcane land in rural Louisiana is as mysterious as it was generous. Recognizing this as a chance to start over, Charley and her 11-year-old daughter, Micah, say good-bye to Los Angeles. They arrive just in time for growing season but no amount of planning can prepare Charley for a Louisiana that's mired in the past: as her judgmental but big-hearted grandmother tells her, cane farming is always going to be a white man's business.

Entertaining and Easy to Listen to
Revisado: 08-08-20
The story is about a woman and her daughter who move to the south and try to make it as sugar farmers. There are some upsetting bits involving her family. The voice of the woman feels very authentic but I think her brother's voice is a bit too one sided.
It's not the kind of book I thought I would enjoy, but I stretched out my chores so I could keep listening!

Adult Fairy Tale
Revisado: 08-08-20
I loved the narrator, so I have no idea what people are talking about. The first ten minutes I was a bit confused, but then I really liked her accent. Even though she has an accent she enunciates clearly and it made the tale seem more homey to me.
The story is about a girl who lives by a wood full of evil things. She loves her village, friends, and family, but is chosen to go live with a wizard.
As with most fairy tales, there is good, evil, and a bit of moralizing, but not in an oppressive way.
