Engaging Story, Compelling Narration

Big fan! I always love the mystery part of a horror / suspense novel and Compton delivered. The multiple perspectives were also done very well! Narration set such a great ambiance and tied the whole story together.

Captivating
Revisado: 05-21-22
I agree that it took a second to wrap my head around some of the culture, but that isn't a criticism. That was one thing that made the setting feel so real. I fear that many reviews are from (and for) people who turn their brains off to read, and this series just feels too engaging for that!
I felt very connected to the characters, and it was so easy to imagine myself in greenbone society. The island and city were throughly developed; it was a great balance of the STORY revolving around the clans without the WORLD feeling dragged around by it.

I'm a big fan of this Author
Revisado: 05-20-22
I highly recommend looking into other series by Will Wight, even if this one wasn't for you.
I don't want to rating-bomb the story because I will likely purchase the hard-copy, and try again with that. Unfortunately, the audio didn't really work for me this time. Maybe if the rest of the trilogy was narrated professionally, I'd push through book one. But I am afraid I'm going to trade in these for another series by the same author -- just narrated differently, perhaps.

In a quest for a simpler life, Helen and Nate have abandoned the comforts of suburbia to take up residence on 44 acres of rural land where they will begin the ultimate, aspirational do-it-yourself project: building the house of their dreams. When they discover that this beautiful property has a dark and violent past, Helen, a former history teacher, becomes consumed by the local legend of Hattie Breckenridge, a woman who lived and died there a century ago.

No reason to fear! You're in good hands.
Revisado: 05-20-22
I found the story to be well written and well narrated, both. There were times where I begged characters just to say what they were thinking, but that's not unusual, and it felt reasonable.
I was concerned around the midpoint that it would go a certain way -- a way that would flatten characters and lose purpose. However, the skill in both writing and narration kept me engaged even in that worry.
I am THRILLED that my bad suspicions were unnecessary.
I very much enjoyed the ending and the decisions made to wrap everything up. I had many right guesses, many wrong guesses, and even moments of real surprise!
.
.
.
(mild spoilers):
I was most worried about Nate's character getting flattened by what was a very female-driven story. The disbeliever, the frustrated, the out of his element... and someone who could be driven to rage or violence. My biggest concern was that he might end up shunted and then vilified by a blossoming relationship between Helen and Riley.
I loved him in the beginning, hated him in the middle, and cannot express how glad I was when he recovered in the end.

Stand-out and unique
Revisado: 08-26-21
I've been reading these back and forth, and I just love them. They really capture a sense of suspense -- the tragedies hit harder when I know they're on their way. The cast is vibrant, and the time skips are very intuitive. No whiplash.
The split format works SO well. It makes the conflicts feel more nuanced, and the innumerable perspectives are incredibly easy to keep up with.
This being the second book (fourth, the way I'm reading it), I imagine this review is more for the Author than potential readers. As an aspiring author, I'm learning a lot; I hope that comes as a great compliment.

Potentially a new Favorite Series
Revisado: 06-30-21
I had no idea I needed a book about pirate-alchemists battling Lovcraftian monsters, but apparently I did!
Between the emersive writing and phenomenal narration, I felt like I was right along side the action. The POV / time shifts were done wonderfully... evil at times, but wonderful all the same. While I didn't feel notable moments of crazy "plot twist" shock, I did feel a LOT of well-done Hitchcockian suspense!
The characters all felt so real, and their dialogue had a sort of... tangibility, if that makes sense. No character felt wasted, and I can only imagine that being more and more true in the companion novel.
If I had one hesitation about the story, it would be that the author absolutely throws you in the deep end with terms and names. It's likely less of a problem when physically reading, but I had a hard time keeping up with some of the crew and the magic as I listened. Nonetheless, I made it out fine and appreciate the faith the author puts in us, the reader, to figure it out.
Now for the hardest decision of my week... which path do I travel down next!? Companion novel or linear sequel!?!
I get the feeling I'll enjoy either one!

Wild Ride
Revisado: 06-23-21
Fast paced and interesting. A good, quick read, but that's largely because it's not the whole story. I am a science idiot, so the technicality of it all was immersive enough for my logic -- though, maybe that's not saying much.
The narrator wasn't my cup of tea, but that's a very personal preference. She simply had a higher pitched voice that I tend not to prefer. Her different voices were convincing and unique, it's just me being picky.
Like I said, the story ended in the middle, to be picked up later. I might purchase part 2, but I might not. It's not one I'm dying to finish. I'm fine leaving it here.
Overall, a good read though. David was probably my favorite character -- maybe because I related to not really understanding what's happening.

Overall, good!
Revisado: 06-09-21
There were definitely moments where the dialogue could've used a few more tags, but it really wasn't terrible. Some of the twists might have been predictable, but maybe I just read too far into things.
Regardless of having an idea of certain twists, my heart still stopped a few times when theories were confirmed.

Did you know that most of our dinosaur fossils were discovered because two grown men absolutely hated each other? It’s true! Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. Choose sides: Cope or Marsh, the jerks who discovered so many dinosaurs; Hamilton or Burr, whose rivalry fueled American politics; and many more....

This was a really fun collection of stories told in a way that felt like I was sitting around the living room just chatting.
A handful of jokes kind of wiffed for me, but that's probably because I'm a prick.

The year is 1970. Emma Gable, a blind teenager coming of age in a small industrial town in Western New York, is about as far from the seismic cultural transformations rocking campuses and city streets across America as a person can get. Emma escapes the chaos of her dysfunctional family by dialing up random numbers on the phone in her bedroom, just to see who'll answer.

Three stars for a DNF
Revisado: 05-28-21
So I might come back and try to finish the story later because it has a lot working for it.
I got about halfway through and realized I was really struggling to stay engaged with one of the MCs (if not THE MC), Emma. And I really wanted to like her! She's such a cool character in theory... I just... couldn't connect. I like her style of humor and frankness but dreaded the scenes she would narrate -- I can't quite put my finger on why.
Other characters were interesting, and the subplots were really engaging... but Emma's story feels like the biggest piece of the puzzle, and I struggled with her.
Definitely give it a try!
