Historia
For decades, Amy ran. Through the dirt roads of Amarillo, Texas, where she grew up; to the campus of the University of Virginia, as a student athlete; on the streets of New York, where she built her adult life; through marriage, motherhood, and a thriving career. To outsiders, it all looked, in many ways, perfect. But Amy was running from something—a secret she was keeping not only from her family and friends, but unconsciously from herself. “You’re here, but you’re not here,” her daughter said to her one night. “Where are you, Mom?”

Well written memoir. written by a very brave, and obviously intelligent author with valuable insights to share.
Revisado: 04-14-25
I loved the vulnerability the author showed throughout a difficult journey of discovery and healing from childhood trauma. I particularly appreciated the honest way she was willing to write about the moments with her 4 kids. I enjoyed the book and recommend to everyone, but especially those struggling with perfectionism, performance based self worth, and those questioning or considering the ever growing field of psychedelic therapy.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. beautiful!!
Revisado: 10-14-22
I usually don't consider novels, as I typically gravitate towards memoirs and other nonfiction, but I'm so thankful I deviated this time! After hearing the author interviewed recently on Glennon Doyle's podcast I thought I'd check it out.
The story is so rich and layered, so beautifully written it brought me to tears. The narration by Lucy Liu was masterfully performed.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who has ever lost something of the highest value, anyone who's been marginalized, all woman, particularly all the mothers out there.
This story will stick with me for a long time!

Historia
It was 1969, and all the rules were changing, when Betty, a woefully single French teacher on Long Island, met the handsome but edgy new teacher at her school -- a hippie just back from Woodstock. His vitality opened up a new world to her, but when they married his rages turned against her, and often ended with physical violence. Like millions of women who discover they've married an abusive man, Betty was forced to make daily decisions to suppress her feelings or risk confrontation, to keep it secret or report, and ultimately, to live with it or leave. Part gripping story, part warm-hearted look at the '70s, and part therapeutic journey.

finally an accurate portrayal of domestic abuse
Revisado: 04-10-22
I've read dozens of books on the topic of abuse. The way this author described her abuse in detail --especially the emotions she felt and the self talk required to survive each incident--deeply resonated with my own experience. I think anyone who has experienced intimate partner abuse will relate to this author's story. It's almost impossible to explain (to the average person) the circumstances of our lives or to or describe in any accurate way the state of mind in which we must exist when living with an abusive partner. There's just too much happening--all at once, and on many many levels-- and the unrelenting nature of having to remain constantly vigilant is too overwhelming to put it lightly. This book was so thoughtfully and honestly written, my heartbeat quickened each time she described her terror and my heart swelled when she described the hope and courage she was able to harness from within herself with the encouragement of her therapist and friends. Anyone interested in peeking behind the curtain of a home plagued by domestic violence should read this book. She does a fantastic job shedding light onto the darkest of places. We need more books written on this topic.

Laughed out loud at several moments. The Next Life No Men chapter rang true and, in light of it, the spirit guide reveal was hilarious. The book reads like chatting with a friend.

We call it domestic violence. We call it private violence. Sometimes we call it intimate terrorism. But whatever we call it, we generally do not believe it has anything at all to do with us, despite the World Health Organization deeming it a 'global epidemic'. In No Visible Bruises, journalist Rachel Louise Snyder gives context for what we don't know we're seeing. She frames this urgent and immersive account of the scale of domestic violence in our country around key stories that explode the common myths....
