I listened to the audiobook but am now going to purchase the actual book so I can look up the recipes. This book is a memoir around food and the discovery of making certain dishes. It’s a slice of life story that is comforting, at times funny and satisfying to listen to. If there were any negative reviews it’s because the reader doesn’t know about or appreciate this type of writing. If you love reading cookbooks for the tales around a particular dish, then this book is for you. The audiobook is well written and well performed.

Any additional comments?

I love the charming, light-hearted and humorous story that Jenny Colgan created in this Little Beach Street series including this book. The narrator of this book, Alison Larkin, is a different one than the first book, Vieda Dehmlow. Ms. Alison Larkin does an overall good job of narrating, mostly, and portraying the various local accents (as far as I can tell) but her attempt at a Southeastern American accent for Huck and his brother is horrible. They both sounds like some twisted characters from Twin Peaks or something - a cartoon trying to make them look as stupid as possible. It was grating to hear their dialogue, although the rest of the book was great and the only reason I listened to the end. Bring back Ms. Dehmlow please, if there are any new books in this series in future.

Just what I was looking for

Looking for something light and entertaining, I came across this title while browsing. The reviews mentioned the bit of magical realism in the story and I decided to try it. Glad I did. I was very entertained as well as inspired to straighten up my house a bit, cut some roses and bring in some rosemary. Now I want to bake something with thyme in it. Lovely characters. Especially Evanelle (sp?). Just downloaded Allen's 2nd book.
