Historia
First published in 1843, it tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean and unpleasant man who dislikes people generally and Christmas especially. One Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come and given a glimpse of the many homes and lives which Scrooge has touched in his wretched life to date. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.

At a Hallowe'en party, Joyce - a hostile thirteen-year-old - boasts that she once witnessed a murder. When no one believes her, she storms off home. But within hours her body is found, still in the house, drowned in an apple-bobbing tub. That night, Hercule Poirot is called in to find the "evil presence". But first he must establish whether he is looking for a murderer or a double murderer.

 charming characters in narration
Revisado: 03-13-24
I particularly enjoy Agatha Christie stories, which include both Poirot and Ariadne Oliver. Hugh Fraser’s narration is excellent. His Ariadne Oliver is hysterical and he nails Poirot.

Historia
Cheverell Manor is a lovely old house in deepest Dorset, now a private clinic belonging to the famous plastic surgeon George Chandler-Powell. When investigative journalist Rhoda Gradwyn arrived there one late autumn afternoon, scheduled to have a disfiguring and long-standing facial scar removed, she had every expectation of a successful operation and a pleasant week recuperating. Two days later she was dead, the victim of murder.

Narration was irritating and pompous
Revisado: 03-09-24
It is a PD, James novel, so it is worth reading. But for her last Adam Dalgliesh story, it is a shame that it was more predictable than any of her other novels. And the ending was full of asides with minor characters, when, as a listener, I would much have preferred a little more time spent with Adam and his future.

The narrator was very difficult to listen to. Many of her hard consonants were so painfully piercing that they hurt my ears. All of her men’s voices were extremely stilted and emotionless, the men sounding as if they were in pain. Adam Dalglish was extremely unappealing . it is a shame that the previous narrator was not available. I will not listen to this again, although I would if a different narrator was available.

Historia
It begins, dramatically enough, with a trial for murder. The distinguished criminal lawyer Venetia Aldridge is defending Garry Ashe on charges of having brutally killed his aunt. For Aldridge the trial is mainly a test of her courtroom skills, one more opportunity to succeed - and she does. But now murder is in the air. The next victim will be Aldridge herself, stabbed to death at her desk in her Chambers in the Middle Temple, a bloodstained wig on her head. Enter Commander Adam Dalgliesh and his team, whose struggle to investigate and understand the shocking events cannot halt the spiral into more horrors, more murders....

As much psychological study as mystery
Revisado: 01-09-24
PD James always wrote beautifully, but this book has reached an extreme of psychological character studies. We are told much more of what is going on in the characters’ minds then we hear of action. It becomes exhausting. The narrator is usually good with characters, but in this book, she has chosen a particularly bloodless, flat voice for Dalglish.

The gang's search leads them into the antiques business, where the tricks of the trade are as old as the objects themselves. I love the gang
Revisado: 11-13-23
So much tenderness, so much humor, and a bit too much in the murder count. I did prefer the previous narrator. This woman is good, but she tends to let a couple of the voices fade away indistinctly. And we do want to recognize our characters from the previous book. I’m sorry to hear that Richard Osman will not be writing another Thursday murder club book for a while.

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Historia
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

And all the stories are warmly, evocatively told by the world-renowned "voice" of Dr. Herriot: Christopher Timothy.

Heartwarming stories, beautifully read!
Revisado: 06-30-22
I have read the James Herriot books several times and listen to them at least twice before, but they never grow old. Christopher Timothy is superb. However, in transferring this book to audible there were a couple of dozen glitches: times when the audio track would repeat the previous two or three seconds of narrative. There isn’t any missing text, the narrative just stutters every now and then.

William Nicholson's Tony-nominated stage adaptation of his award-winning BBC teleplay relates the story of shy Oxford don and children's author C.S. Lewis and American poet Joy Gresham. Shadowlands shows how love, and the risk of loss, transformed this great man's relationships, even with God.

Witty, fast moving, poignant, and splendidly acted!
Revisado: 08-15-21
This live recording of William Nicholson’s play is far more moving— and funny!—than either of the movie versions I have on DVD. I have read many biographies of CS Lewis, and this play, although it creates a couple of composite characters, is truer to the picture I have learned to make of C S Lewis and Joy. Martin Jarvis and Harriet Harris truly are splendid.

Vanessa March's husband, Lewis, is meant to be on a business trip in Stockholm - so why does he briefly appear in newsreel footage of a fire at a circus in Vienna, with his arm around another woman? Vanessa flies to Austria to find her husband, inadvertently becoming involved in a mystery that spans three countries...and the famous dancing stallions of the Spanish Riding School. The moonlight flooded the meadow, blanching all colours to its own ghostly silver. The pines were very black.

Vintage Mary Stewart with special appeal to horse lovers
Revisado: 07-05-21
A very pleasant story, just enough suspense, with a lovely descriptions of Austrian countryside and loving descriptions of the Lippizaner horses. I found the narrator’s tone to be rather flat, with no appreciable difference between one character and another, although she was very easy to understand.
