Good series
Revisado: 12-07-24
I have enjoyed this novella series from Larry. In my experience, much of the Plus Catalog is not worth the time, but this is an exception. I recommend the series.

Buyer, Beware.
Revisado: 02-13-24
I'll admit, I bought this book because of my love of the series without doing my due diligence. It was on sale. That should have been warning enough. This is the WORST narration I have every heard...and I'm including the authors that narrate their own work. I have high expectations of the series and I was expecting an effort equal to its pedigree. I honestly think this is the new business model for Audible. Capitalize on the impulse buy, with the minimum effort on quality. This book was a major contributor to my decision to cancel my membership.

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

Buyer, beware.
Revisado: 02-20-23
I am a fan of Jim Butcher's Dresden series. So, when I saw the 'coming soon' pre-order option for a new Dresden book...I bought it without looking. I know better.
Jim Butcher has a history of spinning off novella's, e.g., 'Side Jobs' & 'Working with Bigfoot', that are of substantially lower quality than the main series. I should have looked at the length (5 hours compared to 12 or more, usually). The performance of James Marsters throughout the audiobook series set the series above its peers and has created a familiarity and attachment with its characters. But, Jim Butcher decided to narrate this book himself. I. Should. Have. Looked.
'The Law' sells for $38. That price sets it in the top 5% of audio books as far as dollars per minute. Audible markets itself as a "provider of premium audio storytelling". When I pay a premium price, I expect a premium product. 'The Law' is not a premium product.
Again. I. Know. Better. I should have looked, but I didn't, and I got taken it. It is my own fault.
That being said, my disappointment in this product and the lack of value for money in Audible remaining products did lead me to finally cancel my membership.

Fraa Erasmus is a young avout living in the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, protected from the corrupting influences of the "Saecular" world by ancient stone, honored traditions, and complex rituals. Over the centuries, cities, and governments have risen and fallen beyond the concent's walls. Three times during history's darkest epochs, bloody violence born of superstition and ignorance has invaded and devastated the cloistered mathic community.

Pedantic

adjective; someone emphasizing their own expertise especially in some narrow or boring subject matter.
I listened to this audio book while writing code for a statistical analysis. The story development was so slow, I could concentrate on code writing and only come back to the audio every once and a while to see if the story line had progressed. Quite frequently, it had not.
Obviously, this book was written to appeal to academics. It has little escapist value.
Even though I bought it on sale (~85% off), I'm not sure I got good value for my money.

Lost interest after a few hours
Revisado: 04-28-22
It's fairly average in many respects, but didn't hold my interest. I think it was because I did not connect with the characters. It's hard to say. Either way, I wasn't interested enough to follow along to the end.

I feel like there was the potential for a sympathetic character and a novel approach...But the story development fell off, there were a couple of short sighted story element that made the story cheesy, and some blatant repetition. In short, a bit disappointing and the feeling the next book would not be worth the price.

Humanity has colonized over 500 planets under the not-always-benevolent administration of the Federation of Planetary States via the FED Army and Navy. Longstanding grievances over economic exploitation by Earth-based companies have grown into a full-scale rebellion, and attempted secession has been tried by many of the more successful colonies. The Rebels believe a peaceful separation is possible. The FEDs believe an easy and swift military resolution is available.
