This was a really fun listen. It’s awesome to have audio in this niche — contemporary, realistic, optimistic. I loved the use of music and the narrative structure that leaned into audio techniques. Great cast and characters to support crisp, clever writing. Absolute masters of the craft.

Good Sound

Five stars for great sound design and because I want to see more investment into these kinds of projects. The story is a little tired, with some awkward info dumps and the kind of pacing that requires tense forced dialog that wears on one’s ears. But the length was about right for all that, which is another good quality. I’m definitely going to give it another, closer, listen just to appreciate the sound work.

Poor Narration Pacing

The narration makes this extremely difficult to follow. Pacing is poor, there’s not enough voice work. One specific issue is the long gaps between phrases that leave room for my mind to wander. Listening at increased speed helps a bit, but then it’s very jerky. Stross read by another narrator is such a delight. This is just a bad match.

Repetitive

Very well cast and performed and produced. But like all monster horror audio, it immediately runs into the problem that there isn’t a big variety of scared acting noises or ways to make things go bump in the night. So it’s multiple hours listening to the same sounds. I really can’t wait until this story fad passes. Note that it sounds like it’s a repackaged podcast.

Funny, Smart SciFi

I’ve been listening to Mur Lafferty for years and always love the funny, nerdy, ultimately kind tone. This locked-room-in-space clone mystery has enough layers in character and plot to keep audience fully engaged. There’s plenty of tension, drama, and gore without resorting to cheap grimness and despair. Cool
Exploration of the benefits and pitfalls of both the mental and physicals considerations of cloning. And it’s super refreshing to find a story that doesn’t center sex or romance for plot development. Mur’s voice is both pleasant and distinct, with a clear sense of humor. Thoroughly enjoyable work.

Excellent, Timely

Wonderfully read and written. The story has both tons of edge-of-your-seat action and tons of the juicy world-building details that are often missing from futuristic fiction. David Collins-Rivera convincingly portrays point-of-view character Ejoq De Santos with sarcasm, wit, grit, and gut-wrenching emotion. I can’t recommend Street Candles highly enough.

Good Sci-Fi Audio Drama

Fun full-cast Sci-Fi Audio Drama with really good sound production. Interesting characters, plenty of conflict, with room left for sweetness. Atmospheric. I look forward to more from this author/universe.
