Historia
"My destiny has never been pre-determined by my skin color, more than anything else, it is being shaped by the choices I make daily, good and bad". This audiobook follows author Melissa Tate’s early life growing up in Africa and eventual migration to the United States. Tate contends that, in America, it is a person’s good choices, not their skin color, that determines the upward trajectory of his or her life. After migrating to the United States at age 19 for college, her experience in America has been a living contradiction to the false “White privilege” narrative.

Historia
Elizabeth's mother was working as a nightclub hostess on US-occupied Okinawa when she met the American soldier who would become her husband. The language barrier and power imbalance that defined their early relationship followed them to the predominantly white, upstate New York suburb where they moved to raise their only daughter. There, Elizabeth grew up with the trappings of a typical American childhood and adolescence. Yet even though she felt almost no connection to her mother's distant home, she also felt out of place among her peers.

Eye-opening awareness
Revisado: 12-30-23
I really liked the basic story line and the performance was really great. I did not feel that some of the geogratory terms needed to be in there in order for the story to flow and have strength. However, it was a story that I did enjoy and would easily listen to again. I wish I could share it with my young te. But due to the inappropriate, sexual innuendoes, I don't feel that I want to share it with them. I will just have to tell them about the main lesson I learned from the book.
I love how the author tied in her honest thoughts about her parents and situations growing up because it's not something often spoken. Getting to "see" the relationship transformation between the author and her mother, but also seeing the adult struggles the author had due to her upbringing, were both things I could connect with. Thank you for sharing. this story makes me interested in more Japanese-US history and the TRUTH behind it.

insightful

It was not quite what I was expecting. But it was very informative and helped me become aware of single Mother's who deal with bigger struggles. Pinner city. there were some guiding principles that I took away from this. That I feel I can apply to my current situation as a single mother.

If you have struggled personally against the powerful draw of pornography, or if you have ever tried to help someone fighting this battle, you know how hard it is to break free. But real freedom isn't found by trying harder to change. Nor is it found in a particular method or program. Only Jesus Christ has the power to free people from the enslaving power of pornography. In Finally Free, Dr. Heath Lambert, a leader in the biblical counseling movement, lays out eight gospel-centered strategies for overcoming the deceitful lure of pornography.

Historia
The Covert Passive Aggressive Narcissist: Finding Healing After Hidden Emotional and Psychological Abuse is the most comprehensive and helpful audiobook on the topic of covert narcissism. This type of narcissism is one of the most damaging forms because the abuse is so hidden and so insidious. You can be in a relationship that can last for decades and not realize you are being psychologically and emotionally controlled, manipulated, and abused.

just what I needed to hear
Revisado: 11-15-22
I can completely relate to everything the author speaks and writes about and I felt this book just hit the nail on the head when discussing this kind of narcissism. It opened my eyes to show me just how much I had experienced of covert narcissism growing up, at work, AND in my marriage. It gave me so much validation for the things I was feeling and courage to set healthy boundaries. I can't wait to listen to it again and share this with others.

Historia
Ten-year-old Manami did not realize how peaceful her family's life on Bainbridge Island was until the day it all changed. It's 1942, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and Manami and her family are Japanese American, which means that the government says they must leave their home by the sea and join other Japanese Americans at a prison camp in the desert. Manami is sad to go, but even worse is that they are going to have to give her and her grandfather's dog, Yujiin, to a neighbor to take care of.

great story, poor audio
Revisado: 01-09-20
this was an excellent story and gave wonderful Insight into what it was like for the Japanese incarceration. Listen to the story from a child's perspective really allows another child listener too late and get into the story. However, the author read so softly that I had to turn up the volume on my headphones and on my phone all the way to here at a normal volume. At times when the soldiers would speak in the story. I got Extremely Loud and referred my ears but then immediately go back to a very quiet and soft-spoken leader. This really made the story very difficult to listen to while I was working and moving about, which is the whole reason why I purchase audiobooks.
