Even better than book 1! John Cook is back - and he’s taking Nazi-names!
Revisado: 11-11-24
Just finished this fantastic second John Cook novel “The Berlin Agent”. It continues to be a totally fresh new ww2 twist-filled story, complete with action, mystery and some brilliant transportive world-building. As the winter nights draw in, do yourself a favor and check out this superb, edge-of-your-seat Jack Reacher / Steven King style work, filled with colorful characters, exquisite detail which brings something brilliantly new to a genre which has been looking for someone to come along and to blow its doors off! WW2 genre - Consider your doors blown off.

Historia
In the nearly two years since Anthony Bourdain's death, no one else has come close to filling the void he left. His passion for and genuine curiosity about the people and cultures he visited made the world feel smaller and more connected. Despite his affable, confident, and trademark snarky TV persona, the real Tony was intensely private, deeply conflicted about his fame, and an enigma even to those close to him. Tony’s devoted crew knew him best, and no one else had a front-row seat for as long as his director and producer, Tom Vitale.

Narrator is fantastic - and the writing smart, and evocative.
Revisado: 02-19-24
Loved this book!! Truly a smart and unique way into the man. The relationship of producer / talent these two people shared provides a truly surprising perspective not provided by almost any other relationship between any two people in life. The result is a powerful portrait of a man - not an idol or a celebrity, or a lover or a chef, but a man under pressure to perform, while so many very practical obstacles - way before any talk of demons - try to prevent the making of art. Honest, moving, funny and totally unputdownable! Highly recommend this.

Historia
May 1940. With Nazi forces sweeping across France, invasion seems imminent. The English Channel has never felt so narrow. In rural Sussex, war veteran John Cook has been tasked with preparing the resistance effort, should the worst happen. But even as the foreign threat looms, it's rumours of a missing child that are troubling Cook. A 12-year-old girl was evacuated from London and never seen again, and she's just the tip of the iceberg - countless evacuees haven't made it to their host families. As Cook investigates, he uncovers a dark conspiracy that reaches to the highest ranks of society.

A New British hero!
Revisado: 12-13-23
Every bit Jack Reacher as the quote on the cover promised - but with a uniquely British two fingers. Dripping with authenticity, and some enough shocking rough edges to keep this out of the ww2 tropes. Welcome to a hardened new character I can’t wait to welcome into my must reads as the next books drop!

Nobody thought it was possible. The Vaccine draws back the curtain on one of the most important medical breakthroughs of our age.

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Narrator distracting
Revisado: 06-24-23
Had to stop during the prologue - the narrator didn’t seem to know what kind of book they were performing, and the breathy, nostalgic tone just doesn’t fit a book about tracking down the source of a deadly virus.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Great book but very distracted by the poor quality of the recording. The room reverberates in a pretty aggressive way that made it difficult to concentrate on the voice.

Historia
At 2:00 a.m. on October 2, 2001, Robert Stevens entered a hospital emergency room. Feverish, nauseated, and barely conscious, no one knew what was making him sick. Three days later he was dead. Stevens was the first fatal victim of bioterrorism in America. Bioterrorism expert Leonard Cole has written the definitive account of the Anthrax attacks. Cole is the only person outside law enforcement to have interviewed every one of the surviving inhalation-anthrax victims, along with the relatives, friends, and associates of those who died.

Phoning it in
Revisado: 07-19-16
The story and science is pretty fascinating and takes you on a bit of a ride. However, after four or five chapters the narrator clearly starts just reading words, with a staccato 'not thinking about what he's reading' sound, and the performance becomes quite difficult to listen to. Almost made me stop listening.
