This book is a warmly relatable memoir about the dawn of electronic music and the power of perseverance. The center of the story is the Chapman Stick – a two-handed, multi-string instrument that must be heard to be believed. Author Michael Kollwitz first encounters this versatile and mesmerizing instrument being played by its inventor, Emmett Chapman, who reappears throughout the story like a musical Willie Wonka. Kollwitz goes on to experience the electronic music revolution as both a fan and a performer, playing for everyone from bikers to billionaires and leaving thousands of audiences dazzled along the way. In the end, his journey mastering “the Stick” and building success as a professional musician relates life lessons about the magic of musical inspiration and the courage required to follow it.

The author’s voice is engaging and expressive. To me, his narration style feels both wise and guileless at the same time.
