In history class in the 90’s, we got a little touch on the Dust Bowl which is mostly, “farms were dying and people packed up in jalopies and moved” and the Great Depression “people were broke and they waited in line for soup and work, and largely became homeless”. You know your Grandparents had money stashed in weird places, canned everything, rarely threw anything away, had little trust in banks, and kept backups for everything. However, I wish I had read this book in school; I would have understood so much more about my family and the lens they saw the world through. While none of my family, as far as I know, had to go through traveling to empty promises, I know they struggled through many of the hardships embodied in this book. The book brings to life a period in time through the relatable emotions and thoughts we all still have today. Who wouldn’t trudge through the scariest thing they have ever done in their life to keep their child alive? Who starved of love and acceptance wouldn’t cling to anyone who provided them a form of adoration? Who wouldn’t be angry at the senseless loss of a friend over someone else’s greed?
I felt the powerlessness of the characters in this book, doing what you can in a broken world. I felt their tenacity and will to live, and the heartbreak of the days that were so incredibly hard to push through, the fear of going somewhere unknown and the nearly equal fear of staying.
Kristin Hannah brought this time period to life in ways I never imagined and I highly recommend this book to readers of all levels.
The narrator was also amazing and I appreciate that she took the time to research the time period, accents, and pronunciation.

This book is beautifully done and tells so many stories of the life and strife of World War II, the quiet ones you don’t hear as often. It is done well and makes you feel so much that each individual was going through in the voices of 2 very different young women as well as the ways that war complicates family relationships and changes the people who live through it. I highly recommend reading this.

Wow, this book went so many places I didn’t expect. The author continues to surprise me and build an even bigger world with more depth and more character growth. I can tell now at the end that she was busy setting up lots of storylines for different characters and building rich full lives for all of them instead of just the main character and I appreciate that so much! The last half of the last chapter of the book is as its own wild ride, and I cannot wait to see what’s in store next.

Of hundreds of books I have read and own, this is one of my favorites and one I re-read the most. As an audiobook, it is one of my comfort books. When I am stressed, tired, broken, restless, anxious or overwhelmed, Elizabeth Acevedo’s performance of her work brings me peace. This story of Xiomara’s is so relatable for me with the contradictions of religion and self, softness and fight, curves and shame, things that should not be mutually exclusive but can certainly be feel that way. I loved Acevedo including Spanish and elaborating in English in a way that helps provide context or definition to the Spanish parts, to make sure all the readers could follow along no matter their degree of exposure to it. This brought authenticity to the characters. I will continue to read this book over and over and I hope if you are reading this you choose to as well.

It was very hard to follow which character was being addressed as the story went on. You have to pay very close attention to when names are mentioned. This is not exactly the author or narrator’s issue as I imagine the book wasn’t written to change perspective and it would have been difficult for the narrator to determine when to change voices.
Otherwise the book is very good. Nice storyline incorporating horror, mystery, and romance.

I got this book on a daily deal and thought, why not, I could use a good scary story in October. It turned out to be so much more than that. The scary story is there, haunted house and everything, but there is also social justice, all kinds of different forms of control and taking that control back, coming of age, racial inequality, love, friendship, complex families, revenge and so much more. This may be one of my all time favorite books now and I read A LOT. I will definitely be picking up everything else by this beautiful skillful author and recommending this book to anyone who will listen!

I needed to hear some of this as a nursing student and baby nurse. It’s been quite a while and it took me entirely too long to know it was okay to say no and that putting more on myself want actually helping anyone when I eventually was getting burned out. I also highly recommend therapy to new nurses, there’s so many big things going on that you aren’t allowed to talk about with just anyone and you still need support.

This book was a really neat combination of cult, contagion, and coming of age. Some of this book did feel like parts were cropped or shortened, which made some of the character relationship building seem improbable, but if you look beyond that to the bond that was obviously intended, this book was really quite good.
Narration wise though, the 2 main characters did not differ very much in their verbal delivery which sometimes made it difficult to quickly distinguish them especially when they were together, but did not severely compromise the book.

This story was wonderfully crafted across many ages and development in character. I found myself truly loving and truly hating some characters, but still also seeing so much of the truly grey areas that make up real people. While some scenarios seem a bit crazy, I felt they were meant to strongly push the character development a certain way to help the reader understand why certain emotions and actions following them may be so strong. The only thing I didn’t love about the book was that ending felt like it had a lot that was left incomplete; it felt as though I was just leaving behind all these stories after investing so much emotion into them. That being said, I would still read this again and enjoy it all over again.

Tiffany brought life to her story in a performance I didn’t expect. She did a damn good job creating different char and moods with her voice. There were several times I struggled to believe the voice was really hers; she was that good.
I always love a good author read book because they can bring in what they were feeling and truly wanting to present, but this was incredibly well done.
The book itself was a retelling of her story as an addict and the many steps along the way that helped her get out of the unbelievably low rock bottom she hit. All of those steps were pretty shocking to any normal person and a big eye opener for people who haven’t struggled with anxiety and depression or addiction. I highly recommend this to people who love an addict, and anyone in the healthcare or justice system, because Tiffany does a great job at illustrating the turmoil, pain, and double life on the side of the addict, and hopefully help you meet addicts with some compassion and understanding.
