I was young and not really paying much attention when so much of what is shared in this book was happening. Russell Bakers life was fascinating, but his mother was maddening and amazing. I’m not sure we would have had Russell Baker as he turned out to be without her.

Joyce Maynard’s story “How the Light Gets In” and the one that started it all, “Count the Ways,” is a beautiful story of a family like so many. Nothing special and yet everything extraordinary. I loved it. I will deeply miss spending time with the main character, the flawed and perfectly broken Eleanor, and her oh-so-human children, everyone else too. The story of the estrangement between Eleanor and her daughter has been a healing balm for me. Just knowing there are so many others out there like me — gives me hope.

I’ve seen several of my own past lives before listening to this book, so I had an understanding of how it works. Then, as I listened Same Soul, Many Bodies, I connected to a new past life I had never seen before. Seeing that new life - and what happened there - gave me real answers to a health problem that was more annoying than anything else. It wasn’t life threatening, but it was life changing to find the answers I needed. The new past life I saw also gave me a deeper understanding of the cause of the difficult relationship my daughter and I have had in this lifetime. Then I went into the future. What an eye opener! I highly recommend listening to this book if you want to solve issues and find answers that have eluded you throughout your life.

I love the way Joyce Maynard writes. Fiction or non-fiction, I’m never disappointed. I’ve read The Best of Us twice now, and I’ll read it again, I’m sure. Joyce is honest and she tells it like it is, even if that means she must cast herself in a less than glamorous light. The love story of her life with Jim is one of my favorites of her books, but that’s always true at the end of any of her books.

I know what it’s like to love someone who is dying. I know how terrible it can be. Joyce honors both her husband and herself as she tells the truth of their story. It is a beautiful and sad story that reminds me of the true cost of loving someone so deeply. Someday, someone is going to get hurt — and it will be worth it.

"On Writing" is as compelling as Stephen King’s novels—not as frightening, but still challenging. It's well worth the time I took to listen.

The first Stephen King novel I read was “Salem’s Lot,” and it scared the f-ing shit out of me. His mastery of horror kept me away from his books for decades. I opted for the movies instead. "The Stand," "The Green Mile," and "Shawshank Redemption" are all favorites. “Bag of Bones” brought me back to reading his books, but “Salem’s Lot” never left me. The horrific image of the vampire Kurt Barlow floating outside Mark Petrie’s bedroom window remains vivid to this day.

"On Writing" takes you behind the scenes of what looks like an easy job – that’s what happens when you’re really, really good at a thing. You make it look simple – and (dare I say it?!) shows how the sausage is made. Writing good stories often creates a big mess. Steven King shows us his big mess in "On Writing" and then he shows us how to clean it up. I actually hated to hear it end (I listened on Audible).

I’ve been writing my family’s history for more than a decade and have almost given up several times. Truth is stranger than fiction comes to mind. I’ve been shocked to hell and back more than once as my research has produced truths I never imagine possible about people I thought I knew. "On Writing" has helped keep me going. Thank you, Mr. King.

The bonus material at the end, where his son joins in, is worth the price of the book on Audible. Im sure I’ll be listening again.

I have recently discovered family secrets of my own that - after a fashion - are mirrored in the story Joyce Maynard tells here. For that reason, I’m certain this fictional tale held an even deeper place in my heart than it would have had the similarities not been there. All of that being true, I can’t imagine not being drawn into this beautiful and heartbreaking story. The layers developed in each of the central characters are so well done, I’d often fall asleep thinking of these folks as if they were real people, wondering what they were doing today. If you are a fan of nature and especially New England, you’ll love the way the author describes that part of our beautiful world. The main love story, at least the one I think of that way, is heart wrenching. But the way it all comes together in the end, is perfect. I’ll be listening to this one again someday soon.

I’m a die-hard Joyce Maynard fan, and this short story proves why. It’s a great tale with a fun—albeit creepy—ending. There’s some dark humor (wasn’t always sure if I was supposed to laugh or not, but I did) and serves as a fair warning to be wise in the people you choose to “follow.”

Joyce tells the truth in a way that breaks my heart while making me feel almost normal in my own family dysfunction. I can’t stop reading/listening.

At times, it felt like the author was telling my story. Every detail so similar. Some so much the same I needed extended time to breathe before I could continue reading. Other times, so completely unknown by detail, but deeply familiar in emotional experience and response. I desperately wanted Eleanor to tell her children the truth of the divorce. It was painful when she didn’t, but I understood why she made that choice. I made a similar one many years ago. If you haven’t guessed already, Count the Ways was like therapy for me. I’ve had lots of that over the years. But in this story of many stories I discovered an unexpected wound still waiting to be healed. Thank you, Joyce.

I really enjoyed listening to this author. His words ring true and were very helpful to me, a writer struggling to tell her story about the fundamental Independent Baptist church in the south in the 1960s. The part about the need for rewrites - often many of them - was so encouraging. I thought there was something wrong with me. Turns out I’m right on track. So glad I bought it. I also have his book by the same name that expand on the ideas shared here.
