One of Chesterton's best works

I grew up reading the Father Brown mysteries. This was my first foray into GKC's nonfiction works - I initially came upon it when I was a college freshman (long time ago now!), in a library display of Great Books of the 20th Century, and I've read it at least once a year ever since. This untidy autobiography contains more mind-opening paradoxes, clever phrases, and zingers per page than anything else of his that I've read, and it never fails to fill me with delight and make me think. The narrator did a great job with the sometimes bizarrely constructed sentences and made it easier to follow. Excellent work all around.

Excellent stuff - as another reviewer commented, it's good to see the detective doing so much legwork to back up his theories! The ending comes off as a tad rushed, but the characters, overall plot, and the narration more than make up for that.

Another excellent installment, full of adventure and intrigue and Temeraire being unintentionally hilarious - and of course this book features the debut of my beloved Tharkay! He is a wonderful foil for Laurence, and it's fun to see their interactions before our hero knows what to make of him. Also Iskierka is a bloodthirsty delight. Simon Vance continues to be an excellent narrator, juggling voices and accents in what seems (to my untutored ear) a top-notch performance.

The plot is a classic Wodehouse confection of misunderstandings, accidental engagements, plans that go pear-shaped, and all manner of ridiculous shenanigans. Despite having read this before, and having enjoyed the Hugh Laurie/Stephen Fry adaptation on screen, I still broke into involuntary laughter at more than one point, delighted by PG's turns of phrase. Jonathan Cecil's reading is immaculate. Hilarious stuff.

I've loved this book since I was a kid, and while it is certainly a product of its time and therefore Problematic from our current point of view, I don't think that should stop anyone from reading//listening to it and getting in on Kipling's love letter to British India. The story is good but to me is secondary to the characters - Kim, the Lama, Mahbub Ali, Hurree Babu, and the old woman from Kulu are the stars of the show and utterly won my heart. Lots of challenging accents to cover, but Sam Dastor nails it.

A fun, energetic romp of a mystery, with plenty of likable (and unlikable) characters and red herrings to keep you guessing till the Big Reveal at the end. I've always like Battle - one of her lesser known detectives, and less iconic than Poirot or Miss Marple, but still good. Simon Jones does a great job narrating.

I adore Father Brown - for me, like many, he was my gateway to all of Chesterton's other works. These stories showcase Chesterton's gift for paradox and the inherent practicality of the faith. Frederick Davidson does all the voices and accents really well, and makes his way through the long descriptive paragraphs with ease.

I loved the Temeraire series when I read it to myself, and I love it even more when Simon Vance is reading it to me. He does all the voices and accents so well that each character really comes alive, making it more exciting than ever to follow Laurence and Temeraire across the ocean to China, where they fight off mysterious assassins, meet Temeraire's mom, and become even more deeply involved in Dragons' Lib.

I've read this play cycle many times, but I've always wondered what it would be like to hear it performed as it was meant to be. Imagine my excitement when such a recording appeared on audible! I've never spent a credit on a book more willingly. This recording was made in 1975, which explains some of the special effects (I found the angels in the first play to be basically inaudible), but it holds up extremely well with Ms Sayers' writing behind it. I cried like a baby during the crucifixion. Excellent production all around.

This book packs an incredible punch in a very short number of pages, and has shaped my thoughts about Heaven and Hell ever since I first read it more than twenty years ago. I read it at least once a year, but this was my first time hearing it as an audiobook. Julian Rhind-Tutt did a fantastic job bringing each character to life and navigating Lewis's descriptive prose. Highly recommend!
