it's a classic story for a reason. Narration?

Gatsby is of course a classic. Now it's one I have finally read. It takes a couple chapters to draw you in, but the second half holds you tenaciously. it captures those Roaring Twenties and yet the theme is eternal.
I found Jake Gyllenhaal's narration underwhelming. many of the characters seem to have the same tone and a lack of interpretation. perhaps it was F Scott Fitzgerald's lack of character development of the women, and it certainly must be hard for a man to give voice to women, but I found the female character development to feel very flat. I wonder what a woman would have done with those parts. nevertheless, a classic and wonderful read.

Anne lamott is the best author in the world at reading her own books. She is so philosophical and so funny, and she just makes it come alive in this book. I hesitate when I buy her books, because the messages are typically the same. Then I buy them and listen to them and think oh my gosh that was the best one ever. So, if you enjoy a little bit of philosophy, a lot of reflection on life's strange paradoxes and contradictions and enjoy laughing to yourself in the car, this is the book for you. If not, definitely don't buy it.

More Jesuits than Ignatius

I am a product and former teacher at Jesuit schools. This was a wonderful and wide-ranging introduction to Jesuit history. Anyone who has been associated with Jesuit schools will be amazed at how the roots of our education or so clearly apparent in the early years. John O'Malley offers her accounting that need not require much background in history of the church. It's quite accessible.
My only problem with the book is the title and cover give so much prominence to Ignatius, but the book really spend so much more time on the early Jesuits. Perhaps Ignatius should be in the subtitle. Given the fact that he wrote something like 6,000 letters of Correspondence, I would have liked to have learned more about him and his particular imprints.
Nevertheless a very good read for people interested in the Jesuit history.

JFK is an absolutely fascinating character. Matthew's gives some insight into that character. unfortunately he doesn't throw many hard balls but instead a lot of softies. It's just a bit too forgiving and praising. But if you're a JFK fan you'll find plenty to make you feel good about him.

these are beautifully written and well-read accounts of moms and their trans children. I listened to the end, which is fairly rare for me. The second to last chapter is well worth waiting for, or skipping to if you get tired of the rest of the stories. As a dad with a child going from female to male, the book is rather disappointing. Perhaps the author could find no dad's. I imagine it's more difficult to find Dad's than moms. Despite that fact, it was deeply enlightening.

this is an extraordinary book about some extraordinary people. It is beautifully written and this version is gorgeously read as well. It drags a tiny bit in chapters 18 to 24, but the last two chapters must be read. the biggest problem with this book has the potential of not letting it sink in. it has every right to change my life in the life of every reader. I feel profoundly inspired and deeply humbled. One of the best books I've read in years.

This is an amazing book. I never felt so ignorant as I did reading this, and never felt like I was learning so much. Consistently interesting from the first to the very last chapter. Absolutely awesome. And very well read on top of that.

Gilbert often simply makes me foolishly smile. At other times, she can tell a story so magically that the hairs stand up all across my arms and neck. In other words, as she writes about inspiration, she inspires. She inspired me to return to my own writing with a lovely mix of lightness and determination. and I can imagine listening to this again, perhaps when I'm in a challenging stretch. it is also a great Delight to listen to her. She has a great voice and because it's her work she knows how to make it come alive
At times, her relentless positivity seems incredible. Either she is almost insanely positive (reminiscent of voltaire's Candide) or she is rewriting her history. I happen to share her view that creative martyrdom is a dangerous myth. But the lightness with which she waves away struggle and ego . . . well, good for her. But really? When Vanity Fair told her to cut her very first published article by 35% or pull it and hope the full piece might run in a future issue, she all but instantly knew exactly what to do and didnt spend a nano-second in confusion or sadness or fear? Again, her positivity is truly inspiring, so if there's a little bit of a shadow side, so be it.
Great stories, empowering messages, well told.

this is one of the most amazing yet difficult books I have ever read. it is not for the faint of heart, but only for those we have a deep philosophical and perhaps the illogical interest in the heart of human relationship

I really love this story. Hard to believe that it was true. I didn't realize I was reading a memoir, which made it that much more amazing. And her voice is a tremendously rich and perfect dark chocolate, sweet, yet full and strong.
