I loved Lucy Broadbent’s easy to approach Audible book. Just like the TV show, there were so many great lessons she brought to the forefront.

This is one of those books that was just an absolute joy to listen to. If you’re a fan of music, this book is for you. Dave Grohl intersperses so many great stories about some of the greatest musicians of our time throughout this very well told autobiography of Grohl’s life. There are so many interesting little tidbits from the explosion of Nirvana to his decision to start the Foo Fighters after Kurt Cobain’s death. One of my favorite parts was how Dave had to take a flight from Australia back home and then back to Australia. If you’re a lover of music, you need to listen to this book!

A powerful listen for anyone who loves music. A very important listen to anyone who has battled any form of cancer

This book with Andrew’s narration was just great. I found his story to be compelling and as a cancer survivor, his insight into surviving cancer and its impact on your life was very helpful. There’s so much in this memoir you can apply to your life. You should give it a listen. You won’t be disappointed.

Here’s more of how I came to know who Andrew McMahon was and why I came to love his music and him as a person.

By chance, I heard my first Andrew McMahon and the Wilderness song in 2017 or 2018. I’m not sure if I first heard his ballad to his daughter “Cecilia and the Satellite” or his collaboration with Lindsey Strirling “Something Wild” but there was something about his music that drew me to him. I was hooked and he quickly became one of my favorite musical artists.

I should tell you something about me. I’m a survivor of a glioblastoma which is an extremely aggressive form of brain cancer that has a five-year survival rate of 5%. I was diagnosed in March of 2013 so the fact I’m still here writing a review of “Three Pianos” is a pretty remarkable thing.

In 2019, I saw that he had a concert at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver. I had just started dating my wife and we were in a long-distance relationship. She lived in Oklahoma and was flying to visit me for the weekend in Denver that weekend. I decided to buy tickets to the show and introduced her to his music so she could familiarize herself with him before the concert.

The concert was amazing. Andrew put on a great live show. Based on his set-list, my wife figured out that he was the lead singer of a couple of her favorite late 90s-early 2000s punk rock bands, Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin. I learned that Andrew was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when he was 22 and was a cancer survivor. of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which is most commonly a childhood cancer.

We all make decisions in a blink of an eye. Sometimes that’s good, sometimes that’s bad, and that’s in short what Blink is all about.

As a glioblastoma survivor, this was a really hard listen but so very worth it. Joe Biden’s reading comes alive with emotion.

Where does The Great Gatsby rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best. I've listened to it twice now, the older version when I was re-reading it before going to see the movie and immediately after seeing the movie because I found the critical reception upseting. I thought for a movie trying to remake The Great Gatsby the movie was pretty dead on. I know it was Lermany (like my new word) but of course it was. With a story as brash as The Great Gatsby, Lerman needed to be over the top and I think that Fitzgerald would have been pleased. But, I digress. I thought Gyllenhaal's reading was very well done -- understated, not too emotional, but easy to follow.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Gatsby. How can it not be Gatsby?

What does Jake Gyllenhaal bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The ability to listen to the book in the garden, in the car... everything that a good audio book can give you, this gave me.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, (SPOILER ALERT) the funeral and that no one showed up.

Any additional comments?

Such a classic in American literature. If you haven't read or listened to this since your high school days, you really should. You will have a much better perspective now than you did in high school, well, at least I did.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Silver Linings Playbook to be better than the print version?

Absolutely. Loved the print version but thought Ray Porter's narration was just fantastic. He brought the book alive in ways that reading it just couldn't. It also brought the story alive in ways that the movie wasn't able to do as well.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Pat Peoples. His general attitude as he progresses through the story is just great. Matthew Quick did a great job crafting such an interesting main character.

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The tones and emotions he conveyed brought the story alive for me. And, honestly, brought the story alive more than the movie adaption (which was great in its own right) I would tell anyone to read/listen to the book before seeing the movie, or, if you loved the movie, I think you'll like Ray Porter's narration of the book that much more.

If you could take any character from The Silver Linings Playbook out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Pat Peoples because I think you'd end up having a fascinating discussion and as a Packer fan, I'm happy he doesn't remember the 4th and 26 disaster.

Any additional comments?

I agree with several reviews that say that this story just makes you smile at the end. And, in today's world, smiling at the end of a story is always a good thing. You owe it to yourself to read or listen to this book.
