Historia
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

good info; cheap production; overuse of swears
Revisado: 04-14-23
narration was rushed and sounded cheap. the content is helpful; but the continuous swears interrupt the message more than making it relatable. some knucklehead keyed my car today, and I didn’t say fu*k as many times as the author did. and my anger was heavily seasoned with creative swear word combos. it was useful to me in the moment to say FU*K in many and various ways and verb tenses (as one might expect). context, you know. this book seemed to be heavily seasoned with mostly gratuitous cussing that, admittedly, was very funny, and sometimes beautifully illustrated certain critical points. I would not, however, recommend this to a therapy skeptic as a first read.

Revisado: 03-28-22
Straightforward, factual, solid philosophy for living a full and satisfying life. The author's narration is first rate. There is wonderful humor, important stories that are hard to speak, and deliciously funny real-life examples of the way he employs certain of the 12 Rules. Also, if you have spent your life wondering about the secret life of lobsters, you will find it here. Quite enlightening, actually.

over-recommended
Revisado: 07-31-21
It was a bit of a misnomer for my particular problem. I also felt as if the author placed an undue amount of blame on victims of domestic violence, and over simplified things. Some of it was helpful; not enough that I would recommend it.

Me encanta esta historia
Revisado: 07-31-21

Even being in therapy twice a week, this book helped me to name what happened to me and remind me that, yes, it really was *that bad*. I only disagreed with the letter writing advice; however I understand that it would be fruitless in my personal situation. Reading this book is self care.

Revisado: 03-05-19
Gaiman is one of my favorite authors, but I have listened (and read) this book more times than I can count. Always there is something new I come away with, be it a wonderful turn of phrase or a powerful new idea of the world as it possibly could be. It has inspired me to learn more about a variety of peoples and phenomena; led me to examine my own beliefs and to embrace the fantastical nature of mystery beyond what is readily perceived. It also reignited some forgotten interests, and piqued new curiosity about others. I love this book.

Timeless.
Revisado: 11-26-18
I've loved this book since I first read it some 35 years ago. I still get wonderfully captured by Adams' beautiful writing, and the compelling story. Ordinary beings achieving extraordinary things through wit, grit, perseverance, love, and community. There is never a time when this story is not highly relevant.

always gets me
Revisado: 10-29-16
I'm sure I've read this book more than 30 times. Had the great honor of teaching it to school students; and the singularly wonderful experience of teaching it to my own child. The story remains relevant and true even to this day. It is humorous, sometimes droll, and paints such a vivid image of humanity through the eyes of childhood with astonishing accuracy. My internal narrator is not Ms. Spacek (my only criticism). I'm sure I'll read it another 30 times before my life is over. "Masterpiece" is an understatement.
