Historia
Behind the tall, foreboding gates of a commune in Brazil, Daniella Mestyanek Young was raised in the religious cult The Children of God, also known as The Family, as the daughter of high-ranking members. Her great-grandmother donated land for one of The Family’s first communes in Texas. Her mother, at thirteen, was forced to marry the leader and served as his secretary for many years. Beholden to The Family’s strict rules, Daniella suffers physical, emotional, and sexual abuse—masked as godly discipline and divine love—and is forbidden from getting a traditional education.

If you’ve ever met anyone that grew up in a cult - listen to this . If you’ve know someone in the service - listen to this .
If your a human - listen to this . Daniella- I don’t know how you all survived your childhood …but you did . I can’t imagine the bravery it took to write . It may be “ hard” to read but imagine living it .
Daniella’s strong voice explains her determination.
So glad it is self narrated.
I wish her all the very best on her infinite road to recovery .

Historia
During January 2021, 10 months into the global pandemic, Sherry Sidoti’s mother is diagnosed with terminal cancer—so Sherry prioritizes a trip to Manhattan over long-awaited empty-nesting and her “second chance” with fiancé Jevon. With new life blooming and loss looming, she is beckoned to answer the question that has haunted her since childhood: Is freedom found in “letting go”, as the spiritual teachers (and her mother) insist—or is it found by digging our heels deeper into the earth and holding on to our humanity?
