I read Carlson Evan’s story because it was referenced as a source at the back of Kristin Hannah’s book, The Women. The latter, a piece of historical fiction. The former, Healing Wounds, a remarkably readable, well written and vital first person account of life both in war time and home and what it took to navigate the devastating obstacles to living well and re-entry before them returning from an unwanted and lost war. Against all odds, Evans and her colleagues achieved the conception, creation, completion and dedication of a statue placed near the Wall on the mall in Washington, D.C., to honor all women, especially nurses, who served during the Viet Nam War. It is an excellent book, part memoir, part social commentary (watch what you say and do lest you become the very public lesson of who not to be and how not to behave), part leadership how-to, and part very necessary manual for anyone also diagnosed with Complex PTS (or who knows and loves someone who is). It is a satisfying walk through the history of a very courageous, determined and heart-centered woman, and visionary, on a mission to continue serving and honoring all involved, who, in the process, jumpstarted her own healing and reconnection journey. You might just be healed a little bit by it too. Going to see this memorial is now on my bucket list. Thank you.

Couldn’t put it down. Entertaining. And… a beautiful, intimate and vivid piece of historical fiction. My heart was broken open and I was given a look into a time that unfolded when I was still an unaware child. I appreciated the opportunity to see and know our world and honor our fellow wo/men who served through an expanded conscience, heart and mind.

Hard to take in and necessary, Margaret J. Wheatley helps as as new and caring leaders, to self-identify as warriors for the human spirit. In this final stage of decline of this wave of civilization as we know it, there are things, good and worthy things, that each of us can do. We can acknowledge the truth of where we are, find our own unique path to contribution (and honor it/do it, and create islands of sanity, communities of awakened individuals committed to being generous, caring, creative and kind to one another, in the midst of the chaos around them. Even in the worst of times, and they are here and will get worse, we can create the conditions necessary to thrive and know joy. But it is up to us. No one else is here to save us. We are it and must decide what role we want to play. Sobering and sad in many levels, this book is simultaneously encouraging and inspiring. A call to action for leaders of these times. I highly recommend it.

I began the deeper part of my healing journey with Cheryl Richardson and her book, Take Time for Your Life… Here I am many years later so grateful for so much and so able to count my blessings, living while I’m alive. This is big for someone who had a death wish in her 20s and 30s and early 40s. The gentle insights into her life now and how she’s turning toward the messages and transitions that come in mid-life felt like an affirmation of my own experience, like a walk of acknowledgement and appreciation with an old friend. Waking Up In Winter was a perfect companion for me as I’m on a very similar journey and offer my clients similar guidance and companionship. It reminded me not to underestimate the importance of these kinds of conversations. Thank you for bringing a softness, beauty and sense of acceptance to that process...and this stage of life.
