Historia
In an era of hardening religious attitudes and explosive religious violence, this book offers a welcome antidote. Richard Holloway retells the entire history of religion - from the dawn of religious belief to the 21st century - with deepest respect and a keen commitment to accuracy. Writing for those with faith and those without, and especially for young listeners, he encourages curiosity and tolerance, accentuates nuance and mystery and calmly restores a sense of the value of faith.

Good overall summary
Revisado: 07-12-24
It's a good summary overall, but it's not entirely clear which events actually transpired in history, and which are from mythology. The author does not necessarily do the best job of letting you know which is which.

Historia
How can we benefit from the promise of government while avoiding the threat it poses to individual freedom? In this classic book, Milton Friedman provides the definitive statement of his immensely influential economic philosophy - one in which competitive capitalism serves as both a device for achieving economic freedom and a necessary condition for political freedom.

Half brilliant, half disingenuous
Revisado: 02-24-24
Literally half the time I found myself admiring Friedman's thought process. The other half of the time, I wondered who he was trying to fool with relentless strawmans and cherry-picking. Half of me recommends you listen to thjs now.

Historia
This classic expose of the Fed has become one of the best-selling books in its category of all time. Where does money come from? Where does it go? Who makes it? The money magician's secrets are unveiled. Here is a close look at their mirrors and smoke machines, the pulleys, cogs, and wheels that create the grand illusion called money. A boring subject? Just wait. You'll be hooked in five minutes. It reads like a detective story - which it really is, but it's all true.

Old Man Yells At Cloud
Revisado: 08-12-23
This is completely disingenuous, designed only to intrigue the mind of the easily manipulated.
Within the first few minutes, the author lets you know that this is all going to sound pretty crazy, but not to worry- he'll fix everything.
He doesn't fix anything. It's all complete nonsense. I'm not sure which is more insulting: the strawmans the author seems to claim are common counterpoints to the (easily refutable) narrative, the cherry-picking to support his own points (very, very selective data is used), or the wild leaps to conclusions the author expects the reader to take along with him.
For reference, this is perhaps the 12th book on the Federal Reserve I've listened to or read. I have done my best to avoid a single point of view or perspective, and I think I've done a good job. There are lots of very good, interesting, nuanced reads on central banking out there.
This book is not one of them. Skip it.

Historia
Work defines who we are. It determines our status and dictates how, where, and with whom we spend most of our time. It mediates our self-worth and molds our values. But are we hardwired to work as hard as we do? Did our Stone Age ancestors also live to work and work to live? And what might a world where work plays a far less important role look like? To answer these questions, James Suzman charts a grand history of "work" from the origins of life on Earth to our ever more automated present, challenging some of our deepest assumptions about who we are.

Revisado: 06-07-23
Few books have done a better job presenting a topic as multifaceted as this. I write every single day, and this book has inspired me and given me great examples of concepts in action.
Somehow, the author avoids being dry, in spite of the enormous scope. The narration is excellent-- as close to flawless as I've heard in years.

Solid narrative for the last century in the US, but some of the assertions were overly simplistic. Recorded before the turn of the century; some of the predictions are a little cringe.

Preachy and arrogant

Sowell absolutely has a unique way of breaking down complex issues, but the sheer amount of cherry-picking, coupled with his way of simplistically rushing past potential objections, makes this book far less palatable than it otherwise might be.

It is now 100 years since drugs were first banned in the United States. On the eve of this centenary, journalist Johann Hari set off on an epic three-year, 30,000-mile journey into the war on drugs. What he found is that more and more people all over the world have begun to recognize three startling truths: Drugs are not what we think they are. Addiction is not what we think it is. And the drug war has very different motives to the ones we have seen on our TV screens for so long.
