Historia
This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

Too detailed and choppy
Revisado: 01-13-22
While I love reading (and listening to) novels about the British Navy in the Napoleonic era, this one has not been a pleasant experience.
The minutiae that was described prevented a coherent storyline from being maintained. Additionally, this manuscript seemed to be very choppy and didn’t flow very well. I’m just thankful that there are other writers of this genre who know how to tell a story without the unnecessary verbiage of this author.

Great information, but it needs to be read by someone who knows the subject!
Revisado: 06-09-20
The information presented in this book is well written and easy to follow. The subject was covered in some depth while staying fairly light and pleasant. HOWEVER, the narrator of this book was NOT familiar with the subject (wine), at least his pronunciation of grape types, locations throughout the world, and many other items were horrid. Many terms and names are pronounced according to their origin, yet this narrator just stated them as if he had never seen or heard any of them before. I.e., Chablis, is pronounced “Sha-blee”, not “Cha-bliss”!!! That is just one of MANY mispronunciations littered throughout this narration. Subject matter = 5 stars; narrator = 0 stars!!!

Good, but could have been better!
Revisado: 01-21-20
The story of this family is fascinating and the content provided in this book does a fairly good job relating the story. However, at times the continuity of family history was confusing. The voice of the narrator became irritating and rather monotonous as it droned on. Additionally, the narrator mispronounced the names of a few of the vital characters in this book indicative of his reading the book without knowledge of the people in the story.
