Historia
The 10 enlightening (and often humorous) lectures of Medieval Myths and Mysteries will show you how far from the “dark” times of legend these centuries were. Uncover the facts about the Knights Templar. Reveal the truth behind the tales of legendary creatures like the Questing Beast and the unicorn. Trace the events of the Black Death and the ways it altered the world in its wake, and much more. With Professor Armstrong, you will dig deep into the ways that later generations reshaped the narrative of the medieval years and perpetuated the myths.

Monasteries became "accidentally wealthy" 😆
Revisado: 03-28-24
A very blatantly pro-Catholic, pro-Chtistian white-washing and shallow "story" of history, and within 20mins. The above title is a quote from this propaganda. The Crusades... "accidentally made monasteries wealthy"?? Accidentally!!?!
Literally unbelievable.

Narration is so droll it makes me want to peel my face off. Nasal, bored, dropping with ennui. I tried changing the narration speed to 90%, 95%, 105%... nope. Just awful.

Horrible Accents by Narrator. Couldn't take it. The quasi-pirate voice was bad enough, but his "slave" voice.... just AWFUL.

With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century.

Awful narration.
Revisado: 09-23-21
Narrator attempts to read in what sounds like a dripped octave from her natural voice. Every S and soft C is like i"ccc"e. Strange stops in the flow, as though someone were reading it -- and aloud -- for the first time. Don't buy a face to narrate...hire a voice actor!

Historia
A classic novel by John D. MacDonald with an exclusive introduction written and read by Dean Koontz. Once an ordinary math teacher, Omar Krepps developed a knack for gambling, amassed a fabulous fortune, and spent the rest of his life traveling the world and giving away his millions. Upon his death, however, Krepps bequeaths nothing to his nephew and only living blood relative, Kirby Winter - nothing, that is, except an antique watch and a sealed letter to be opened after one year. But Kirby has much more in his possession than he realizes. The watch has the power to manipulate time.

Painful sexualization and abuse of women...
Revisado: 01-30-21
The Dean Koontz intro is an open apology for the "cringe-worthy" instances of sexism and use of sexual assault as humor and plot points...
He didn't add that these themes and use ARE LITERALLY CONSTANT throughout the text, and blatantly so.... the blatant sexualization of EVERY female character (including forced nudity and even gang rape as punishment !and gratification!) is to a psychiatrically obsessive extent....
this sexual plot and endless descriptors form MUCH more of the text than the actual plot does!
A very disturbing look into the male world of 1962.
And the best parts of the book -- the actual time-power subject matter -- is barely developed at all in favor of constantly talking about breasts and groping and undressing incapacitated women BY THE DOZENS. "Cringe worthy" indeed. *smh*

Sex with a rotted, stinking corpse? Really?
Revisado: 01-21-21
A hot, young girl working in a morgue that lusts after a rotted, stinking, broken, maggoty zombie-corpse, and makes out with it and its fetid erection? Wth.
Only from a (an extremely juvenile) male author.

Historia
In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Meh. Reptitive, florid metaphors and off accents.
Revisado: 01-19-21
The constant descriptive metaphors, many of them repeated many times, went from annoying to grating to a drinking game. The narrator was to breathily melodramatic, and although she did a good generic African accent, the same accent was used for a young Italian American kid....? Was confusing.
I found the plot pretty obvious and predictable. The main theme was beaten to death and way too drawn out to be satisfying... I'm just really, really surprised this book won so many awards.
Best left for young teens, I think.

Fast-paced, insistent narration that, yep -- literally counts sheep. And in an "impatient" East Coast style. "Count the sheep already!"
PS: imagining "hundreds and hundreds" of sheep in one's "fenced in meadow" (??) is ALARMING, not peaceful!!
