Revisado: 12-06-23
Despite the enormous success of the circus, the school is still broke. Lady Viner has them evicted, so the curriculum turns to living off the land. Tom Hollander continues to bring the story alive with his brilliant narration. I will never tire of him saying ‘Choclat’. Despite my childhood being long ago, I always learn something new from these books. Refreshing. A great break from the monotony of the news cycle.

Historia
There’s no school that’s quite like Ribblestrop, complete with roofless dormitories, distracted teachers and a perilous underground labyrinth. And then there are the students! You’ll meet Sanchez, a Colombian gangster’s son hiding from kidnappers; Millie, an excluded arsonist and self-confessed wild child; Caspar, the landlady’s spoiled grandson; the helpful but hapless Sam and his best friend, Ruskin, plus a handful of orphans from overseas who are just happy to have beds - even if they are located in a roofless part of the building....

Tom Hollander is brilliant
Revisado: 12-01-23
I bought this book solely on the basis of Tom Hollander’s narration of a Diane Wynne Jones book - Conrad’s Fate. He is my favourite narrator of children’s books. Some British actors are just superlative at character voices. As for the story, well I’m a bit of a sucker for the pure escapism of children’s literature. You need to be able to enjoy a tall story with a lot of improbable silliness - in the vein of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. There are some interesting characters here, mostly male. I particularly enjoyed Captain Routon. I also like the empathy tor delinquent characters like Millie,

Historia
In a world of witches, daemons and vampires the fragile balance of peace is unravelling. Diana and Matthew's forbidden love has broken the laws dividing creatures. To discover the manuscript which holds their hope for the future, they must now travel back to the past. When Diana Bishop, descended from a line of powerful witches, discovered a significant alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, she sparked a struggle in which she became bound to long-lived vampire Matthew Clairmont. Now the coexistence of witches, daemons, vampires and humans is dangerously threatened.

A lot of depth in this story
Revisado: 10-08-23
I was drawn into this trilogy by the TV series. The sets were pure eye candy.
The changes in Matthew’s character as he merges back into a darker former persona are insightful and a new selfless hero in the form of Gallowglass emerges. Maybe he deserves his own book.
As an Australian, i find it difficult to get past the grating eastern American accent, but I suppose it is in keeping with the story. The performance was excellent.

Historia
The honourable Christopher Fancot, on leave from the Diplomatic Service in the summer of 1817, is startled to find his entrancing but incorrigibly extravagant mother on the brink of financial and social ruin - and more than alarmed that his identical twin, Evelyn, Earl of Denville, has disappeared without trace. Christopher, or Kit, the respectable brother, is forced into an outrageous masquerade by his wayward family's tangled affairs. But in the face of Evelyn's continued absence, even Kit's ingenuity is stretched to the limit.

Spoilers ahead. It’s time for a very domestic story in this episode as we quietly cheer on the growing closeness between lovelorn Adam and the ever-practical Jenny. Jenny might be the least likely heroine in the Heyerverse but she marries a man hopelessly in love with another, just because it’s the only thing she can do to help him. That makes her a hero in our eyes - although we could wish she set a slightly lower standard in wifely behaviour, because she’s making the rest of us look bad. She certainly makes a better wife than Julia - the ethereal beauty who swoons at parties, and ...

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

I was prompted to buy this romance after watching the BBC series. There are a few differences between the book and the series, most notably the BBC compresses the end of the story for a quicker resolution. The novel and the series have been compared to Pride and Prejudice, but are not derivative of it. The theme of the novel is conscience and the decisions it leads us to make.

Historia
There's only one fact that notorious rake Lord Charles Carlisle and his cousin, Fitzwilliam Darcy, can agree upon: a house party given by the Marquess of Bentham is bound to be intolerably dull. To relieve his boredom, Lord Charles accepts a bet that he can seduce his sister's pretty friend during their stay at Bentham Park. After all, it's easy money for an experienced seducer. Why should he care if his staid cousin Darcy disapproves?

Austen-like dialog sparkles
Revisado: 12-01-13
Where does Mr. Darcy's Noble Connections rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
AR is a great writer of Pride & Prejudice variations. The witty repartee shines. The prose is high quality.
Slightly warmer than Georgette Heyer but still very sensual rather than physical.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Favourite scene. Lisbeth's late night departure from Bentham park.
What does Elizabeth Klett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Extremely good narration.
But still a few mispronunciations? Isn't it per-goal-a?

Salacious cuts
Revisado: 11-25-13
Where does The Mummy or Ramses the Damned rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The narration by Michael York is outstanding.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
It was difficult to make sense of the story because of the small amount of the original text used.
Have you listened to any of Michael York’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. But I'd be interested to listen to further books by him.
If you could take any character from The Mummy or Ramses the Damned out to dinner, who would it be and why?
No brainer. Ramses.
Any additional comments?
The music was sometimes distracting.

Fact: A Goon is a being who melts into the foreground and sticks there.… When the Goon turns up demanding "Archer’s 2,000", life turns upside down. As Howard desperately tries to get to the bottom of this peculiar demand, he discovers that the town is run by seven crazy wizards (not all of whom live in the present!) and someone is trying to take over the world! Exciting, bizarre and truly hilarious!

Outstanding narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
For those who love fantasy, you can't go past Diana Wynne Jones for invention. Yet this book somehow failed to grip me; perhaps it was sheer awefulness of Awful. Margoyles has turned this into one of my favourite audiobooks.
What did you like best about this story?
This is not my favourite Diana Wynne Jones story by far, but the narration makes it outstanding.
What does Miriam Margolyes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She is a consummate voice actress. Her portrayal of Dillon makes you believe a glamorous beauty is mouthing the words.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, but I enjoyed every moment.
