trigger warning, not for sensible hearts
Revisado: 07-03-23
the very beginning of this book describe an infant loss in terrible details, while the mother is rendered incapacitated but concious and unable to help. Horendous beginning, worst mind images and so hard to get rid of. Not for sensible hearts.

I do like that kind of book, where no one is really a bad person but has its quirks, with a lot of hope, a glimpse of surnatural, action, adventure and redemption. An easy listen for those seeking distraction!

not mainstream
Revisado: 04-29-21
Loved this book, the depth of the characters, the fact that it talks so much about mental states with no taboos or blame and the mix of everyday and extraordinary! Not for everyone I'm sure, but if you like psychologie, soft suspense and getting off the main path I suggest this very entertaining read!

Some lines should never be crossed. Police corruption, an investigation that ends in tragedy and the mystery of a little girl’s silence – three unconnected events that will prove to be linked by one small town. While detective Cormac Reilly faces enemies at work and trouble in his personal life, garda Peter Fisher is relocated out of Galway with the threat of prosecution hanging over his head. But even that is not as terrible as having to work for his overbearing father, the local copper for the pretty seaside town of Roundstone.

Historia
A visit to the urologist has never been more hilarious - or revealing - than in Men’s Health, a new comedy written by Daniel Goldfarb and directed by Scott Ellis. Adam (Tony® winner Santino Fontana) is a TV writer in search of a diagnosis for a very personal problem. He ends up half naked and fully freaked out in the exam room of Dr. Szabo (Tony and Emmy® winner Tony Shalhoub), a physician with a unique bedside manner offering some truly unorthodox treatment options.

fun, funny, and fantastic performance
Revisado: 03-18-21
Both main characters are amazingly rendered, the story is wonderfully novel and uncongruous, but its main characteristic is how incredibly funny it is, I laughed and rolled my eyes and shook my head all along! Much too short, but it will be a renewed pleasure to listen to it again a couple years, once I've forgotten some of it!!

Being able to see what’s happening around us can help us make smart decisions. But knowledge — especially knowledge of how others perceive us — can also hold us back, mire us in needless worry, and keep us from achieving our potential. This week, we look at the paradox of knowledge.

naivety vs realism + cues
Revisado: 03-09-21
Amazing subject, very nicely brought, gives hope for the individual targeted by discrimination, and gives cues as to make society better without having to be miserable to help. Especially, the tought/theory about the threshold over which someone would become too exposed to a wrongfull intent toward its discriminated group was soothing for me, who tought I was just hypereactive but still felt the need to protect myself against one more personnaly unusefull intimate knowledge of violence. Thank you for making those subjects accessible.

Different, humanity's humanity
Revisado: 02-26-21
Depends on how you like your stories; sometimes brutality adds realism. I think this is the case in this book that otherwise very kindly open your mind to other vues and ways of life. This is told through the eyes of an ever-forgiving messenger, it definitly brings us in a different world.

Great introduction to a great series
Revisado: 02-13-12
I read this after book #8 of this series, and am glad that while it cleared up some finer points of the 8th book, no harm was done to my enjoyment through reading them out of order.
The protagonist Andy Carpenter is a dog-loving attorney with enough self-deprecating humour that I can forgive him living in a world without all the niggling problems we mere mortals encounter everyday. Then he inherits 22 million $. Thankfully he puts his money to good use to help unfortunate victims of crime.
The who-dunnit part is interesting but not terribly surprising, which doesn't bother me as I listen to books more to have a glimpse into other people's life than to give my brain a work-out.

Historia
Throughout human history, certain drinks have done much more than just quench thirst. As Tom Standage relates with authority and charm, six of them have had a surprisingly pervasive influence on the course of history, becoming the defining drink during a pivotal historical period. A History of the World in 6 Glasses tells the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the 21st century through the lens of beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola.

Very interesting take on history
Revisado: 02-13-12
This book brings history close to home through it's examination of the influence the stuff we chose to drink had on world development, from water through to harder stuff.
It makes me think of books like "Salt", but was less exhaustive - as well as shorter and more to the point.
While not the deepest book about history, it was very interesting.
